Astronomy on Tap Köln

Astronomy on Tap Köln Astronomy on Tap Köln is a fun bar event with astronomy talks for the public at Theatercafé Filmdose! This page is for the satellite in Köln, Germany.

Astronomy on Tap is an event that launched in New York in 2014 (https://www.astronomyontap.org). This event typically features a few motivated individuals giving short presentations in the informal setting of a bar or pub. Since 2014, numerous 'satellite' events have opened in other cities around the world. We are a few doctoral researchers at Universität zu Köln who have an ambition for public ou

treach. Having launched our first event in mid-2020, we were completely virtual on YouTube. We have now started hosting our events in Expat Cafe and Bar, but with technical difficulties we temporarily stopped streaming on YouTube. Our events feature one astronomer giving a 20-minute presentation and a discussion/quiz of recent events in astronomy. On this page you can find information on all of our activities. We used to post about twice a week to describe various astronomical objects, but this has stopped. If you are interested in our logo, it was designed by Akhil Jaini. You can find his profile at https://www.fiverr.com/buckleupgenius.

We're excited to announce our first speaker for the next Astronomy on Tap!

The talk in German is by Dr. Rebekka Grellmann, who works at the Deutches Zentrum für Luft und Raumfahrt.

The talk is titled: Planetenentstehung durch Staubexperimente im schwerelosen Labor verstehen

Planets form when tiny dust grains collide with each other and gradually grow into large clumps. But how exactly does this process work? To investigate this fascinating question, scientists conduct dust experiments under weightless conditions — for example, in space. This lecture explains how these experiments work and what we have learned so far.

Rebekka is an astronomer who worked as a postdoctoral research at the University of Cologne. She now works at DLR as a project manager.

Join us over a pint of beer and see her talk. We hope to see you at event

🔭 Astronomy on Tap Köln – May Edition 🍺

Join us on 27 May Wednesday) at 19:00 at Theater in der Filmdose (Zülpicher Str 39, Köln) for an evening of astronomy, beer, and a pub quiz with prizes.

We have two fantastic speakers lined up:

🟠 Dr. Rebekka Grellmann-

Rebekka worked at the University of Cologne as a post doctoral researcher and now works at DLR as a project manager and research associate.

🟠 Dr. Maude Charmetant-

"The German Space Agency: from scientific ideas to actual space missions."

Theme: Space missions do not start with rockets, but with ideas. In this talk, we will take a look behind the scenes of the German Space Agency and explore how scientific projects are selected, funded and followed from proposal to reality.

Maude did her PhD in astronomy from the University of Bonn, and now works on space projects at the German Space Agency. A scientist by the day and a castle explore by night, she's working on her long life project of visiting all the castles in Germany.

The talk in German will be given by Prof. Dr. Stephan Schlemmer, Professor of Physics at the University of Cologne.

The talk is titled:
Der Sound des interstellaren Raums – Aus dem Orchester der Moleküle
(The Sound of Interstellar Space – From the Orchestra of Molecules)

The spectra of molecules captured by telescopes are in (almost) perfect harmony with one another. Each molecule has its own melody, just like the individual instruments of an orchestra. Stephan will report on some of the tracks that reach us.

Stephan's favourite science topic is molecular physics. His research concerns the formation and destruction of molecules in space and in the laboratory, and the spectra they emit in the course of their motions.

We're excited to announce our second speaker for the next Astronomy on Tap!

The talk in English is by Morgan Owen, who is doing his PhD at the University of Cologne.

The talk is titled: "Astrochemistry: Simple Molecules to the Building-Blocks of Life"

Space is not as empty as you might think… Once considered to be devoid of molecules, over 300 different molecules have since been observed in interstellar space over the last century. How do we observe molecules in space, and why do we go to great effort to do so? What can they tell us about the formation of stars, planetary systems, and even life on Earth?

Originally from the UK, Morgan is now a PhD student at the University of Cologne, working in the Galactic Ecosystems group of Prof. Arshia Jacob to investigate the chemical and physical complexities of low-mass protostars.

We're excited to announce the speakers for the next Astronomy on Tap.

The talk in English is by Himadri Saha (.saha), titled Riding the Light: a journey across the spectrum

Light comes in a huge spectrum of colours, far beyond what our eyes are capable of seeing. We only discovered there is light beyond the visible range as recent as the 19th century. Since then, we have developed fantastic technologies to explore the whole spectrum of light - spanning over 12 orders of magnitude. We take a journey across this multi-flavoured nature of light, how its duality and properties drive the technology and the information they reveal about the universe.

Join us on 25 March(Wednesday!) at 19:00 at Theater in der Filmdose (Zülpicher Str 39, Köln) for an evening of astronomy, beer, and a pub quiz with prizes!

We have two fantastic speakers lined up:

🇩🇪 Leonard Kaiser – Magnetfelder: Das Unsichtbare sichtbar machen – Wie messen wir Magnetfelder im Weltall? Und was verraten sie uns über unsere Galaxie?

Leo studied physics in Aachen and is now doing his PhD at the Universität zu Köln, working on galactic magnetic fields and how to observe them.

🇬🇧 Himadri Saha – Riding the Light: A Journey Across the Spectrum – Light comes in a huge spectrum of colours, far beyond what our eyes can see. We take a journey across its multi-flavoured nature, how its duality and properties drive technology and what it reveals about the universe.

Himadri is a PhD student developing next-generation instrumentation for the CCAT/FYST telescope — where the nerdy engineer's brain meets the astronomer's heart.
