Sustainability reporting and packaging regulation are changing how industrial companies manage data.

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requires more structured and verifiable sustainability information. The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) introduces stricter requirements for packaging design, reuse, recyclability and resource efficiency. Together with the Digital Product Passport, these rules increase the need for reliable and connected data.

For manufacturers, fillers, chemical companies and operators of reusable industrial packaging, the main challenge is often not a lack of IT systems, but a lack of transparency at container level. Fill levels, usage cycles, movements, residual quantities and returns are still not tracked continuously, creating critical gaps between compliance, operational efficiency and circular economy goals.

⏰ A small reminder on PPWR: August 12, 2026 is getting closer.

With the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, the way companies manage industrial transport packaging is changing significantly - especially for businesses working with IBCs, drums, canisters, and other reusable packaging assets.

From August 2026 onwards, several key requirements will become relevant:
✅ demonstrably functioning reuse systems
✅ end-to-end traceability of packaging movements
✅ 10-year documentation for reusable packaging
✅ digital processes for collection, reconditioning, and redistribution
✅ reliable data instead of manual Excel sheets or paper-based records

One important point: A robust IBC alone is not enough to qualify as “reusable packaging” under PPWR. What matters is the system behind it - including tracking, reconditioning, documentation, and reporting.
Companies that start preparing now will not only strengthen compliance, but also gain greater transparency, improve fleet utilization, and build more resilient supply chains.
