Why Aircraft Maintenance Training Must Go Beyond Shadowing

Effective Aircraft Maintenance Training is critical for developing safe and competent aviation technicians. We often hear the same phrase when a new technician starts:

“Have him shadow one of the senior guys for a few weeks.”

At first, that sounds reasonable. Shadowing has its place. Watching an experienced technician work can help a new hire understand flow, habits, standards, and expectations. But somewhere along the way, many organizations began treating shadowing as if it were a complete training program.

It is not.

What separates a course that prepares you for an exam from one that prepares you for a career?

In our latest interview, Andrew Trinchero, Managing Director of Academy Aviation Group, breaks down what aircraft type training really means for licensed technicians and why it's one of the smartest investments in a long-term aviation career.

Key takeaways from the conversation:

- Why type-specific training is the dividing line between knowing an aircraft and truly knowing one
- How global regulatory approvals (FAA, EASA, UK CAA, GCAA, CAAS, DGCA, CASA) expand career mobility
- What makes Academy's instructor-led, hands-on approach different
- How to choose a training provider that prepares you for the job, not just the test

When the Classroom Doesn’t Close

In aircraft maintenance training, the real measure of a course isn’t the final exam. It’s what happens months later, in a hangar, when an experienced technician is staring down an intermittent fault that refuses to be reproduced on the bench. This is the story of one of those moments, and what it reveals about how Academy Aviation Group builds training relationships that outlast the syllabus.

Why Critical Thinking Matters in Aviation Maintenance Training?

Our Experienced Instructor, Florian Schaller, said that:

"One of the important maintenance issues in the real world, which students do not learn from manuals, is that many aircraft malfunctions occur during flight, but most troubleshooting and testing are done on the ground. Therefore, a major factor is absent during troubleshooting, which is actually present during flight, i.e., temperature, pressure, vibrations, airflow, and speed. As a result, it is possible that a system may pass all tests on the ground, but it can have the same problem during flight. In such cases, it is possible that the maintenance personnel may have actually followed all the procedures described in the manuals and performed all the tests, but the problem is still there..."
