DRUG-SCREENING ON CONTRACTILE TISSUE

The myrImager is a video-optical high-throughput imaging platform designed to work seamlessly with the myriamed 48-well 3D cell/tissue culture plates. Together, they provide an advanced imaging solution for iPSC-derived tissue models used in research and drug screening aligned with ICH hERG testing guidelines.

The myrImager is a high-throughput drug screening platform to image pluripotent stem cells-based tissues like heart muscle (cardiomycytes), skeletal muscle and connective tissue in myrPlates and performs contraction kinetics (force-time curves) e.g. for funtional IC50/EC50 studies.

Developing new medicines is complex, costly, and time-consuming. At myriamed GmbH, based in Göttingen, Germany, we help drug developers make better decisions earlier — using advanced human stem-cell-derived 3D tissue models that simulate health and disease directly in the dish. myriamed’s engineered tissue platforms are designed to support early drug discovery, candidate refinement, safety assessment, and dose definition for first-in-human studies.

At the core of this approach is myrTissue-Cardio: bioengineered human cardiac tissue derived from iPS cells. These 3D heart muscle models beat rhythmically, mimic key features of human myocardium, and enable highly relevant functional testing of drug candidates in a human-based system.

Now, myriamed takes this technology one step further with the powerful combination of myrPlates and myrImager.

🧫 myrPlates are 48-well 3D cell and tissue culture plates designed for the construction and long-term culture of engineered tissues. Each well contains flexible stretchers that support tissue formation in a ring format under defined mechanical load. The stretchers include fluorescent markers for optical tracing of mechanical forces generated by the tissue.

📸 myrImager is a state-of-the-art automated imaging and analysis platform developed for use with myrPlates. It enables non-invasive, high-precision, high-throughput analysis of cardiac tissue function — without direct cell imaging — and is designed for laboratories in research, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals.

Together, myrPlates + myrImager create a comprehensive solution for using engineered human tissues in drug development:

✅ Functional analysis of 3D cardiac tissue
✅ Reproducible high-throughput screening
✅ Longitudinal measurements over time
✅ Human-relevant insights into efficacy and safety
✅ Reduced reliance on animal testing
✅ Better prediction of drug effects before clinical trials

This combination makes it possible to evaluate drug candidates on human-like tissue responses earlier, faster, and with greater physiological relevance — helping researchers identify promising compounds and detect potential risks before they reach patients.

Beyond cardiac tissue, myriamed also develops advanced 3D models for skeletal muscle and brain research, supporting a broader vision: accelerating personalized medicine and making drug development more predictive, ethical, and efficient.

When tissue models start to contract: a shift toward functional relevance in drug discovery !

myriamed GmbH´s 3D organoids cultured on MyrPlates illustrate how advanced model systems are moving beyond structural representation toward measurable functionality. The coordinated contractions observed in these organoids are not merely visually compelling—they reflect tissue-level organization, intercellular coupling, and emergent physiological behavior that more closely approximates in vivo conditions than traditional 2D cultures.

🔬 Such functional phenotypes provide biologically meaningful readouts. Contractility, for example, can serve as a quantitative endpoint for pharmacological profiling, toxicity assessment, and disease modeling. This enables a more nuanced evaluation of compound effects early in the development process.

Within this integrated setup, the MyrImager adds an important analytical dimension. By enabling high-resolution, time-resolved imaging of organoid behavior directly on the MyrPlates, it facilitates the quantitative capture of dynamic phenotypes such as contraction patterns, frequency, and amplitude.

📊 This allows functional readouts to be systematically recorded, compared, and incorporated into data-driven workflows.

In this context, myriamed GmbH ’s platforms and services support the generation of standardized, scalable 3D organoid models combined with compatible imaging and assay technologies. By increasing physiological relevance while maintaining experimental control, these systems can enhance the predictive power of preclinical testing and contribute to more informed decision-making in lead identification and optimization.

As the field continues to prioritize translational validity, integrating functional 3D models with quantitative imaging may help reduce late-stage attrition and improve overall R&D efficiency.

How are you integrating functional readouts like contractility into your preclinical models?
