☀️🏢 A recent study published in Nature Energy, “Mapping Europe’s rooftop photovoltaic potential with a building-level database”, highlights the enormous untapped opportunity of rooftop solar across the EU. According to the research, nearly all EU countries show a technical non-residential rooftop PV potential above 40 GWp, while rooftop PV could provide up to 40% of required solar capacity in ambitious 100% renewable energy scenarios.
Today, only around 10% of suitable rooftops are equipped with solar PV, representing about 215 GW installed, yet the EU aims to add another 200 GW by 2030. 📈⚡ The data clearly shows that commercial and industrial rooftops remain one of the fastest and most efficient pathways toward energy independence, lower electricity costs, and grid resilience.
From logistics parks 🚚 and factories 🏭 to shopping centres 🛒 and public infrastructure 🏢, the next phase of Europe’s solar growth may already be built above our heads.
