At the Commonwealth Maritime Domain Awareness Summit 2026 in Vancouver, DNV contributed to discussions on how cybersecurity has become a core pillar of maritime safety, with direct implications for vessels, crews and operations.
In the session “Digital Maritime Domain: Cyber and AI”, our expert Thierry Coq highlighted that cyber risks at sea are no longer limited to IT, but increasingly affect safety-critical operational systems. He underlined how regulation is moving from policy to engineering, with cybersecurity now embedded into vessel design and lifecycle requirements, and stressed that the human element remains decisive. Cybersecurity at sea must be engineered like buoyancy or propulsion, he said: essential, complex underneath, but operationally simple and fully usable by the crew.
The Summit, which DNV supported as a Lead Sponsor, brought together around 150 senior leaders from navies, governments and industry to deepen collaboration at a time when cybersecurity and supply chain resilience are becoming ever more critical. With most Commonwealth countries having a shoreline, strengthening maritime safety is not optional, but essential. A big thanks to Commonwealth Security & Resilience Group for organizing the summit!
