At the KDCT 2026 Workshop in Washington, DC, SphingoTec’s Managing Director and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Florian Uhle, took the stage during “Session 9A: AKI 3 — KDCT AKI Trial Design Studio: AI innovations in clinical trials design and analysis”, alongside global experts from academia, regulatory bodies, and industry. Freshly published in Critical Care (Springer Nature): When creatinine looks “normal”, penKid tells a different story.
In patients with sepsis or septic shock, early recognition of kidney deterioration is critical. Yet many at‑risk patients remain undetected because their serum creatinine (sCr) levels still appear normal.
A newly released patient‑level meta‑analysis now provides robust clinical evidence that proenkephalin A 119–159 (penKid) offers predictive value beyond sCr for assessing kidney function and prognosis.
Drawing on data from over 2,200 patients across four independent studies, the analysis demonstrated:
✅ penKid predicts worsening renal function (WRF) and 28 day mortality, even when sCr remains within the normal range.
✅ Combining penKid with sCr improves risk stratification and supports timely clinical decisions in sepsis management.
These findings shed light on a clinically underserved group of patients—those who already experience functional deterioration despite normal creatinine values.
penKid helps close this diagnostic gap, supporting earlier and more precise patient care.
