Recording in progress at UdK Berlin 🎙️

How do you mic a string ensemble to capture a musically coherent timbre? That’s the question behind an international research project happening right now at the Berlin University of the Arts.

An international team of researchers is recording with a 64-channel setup – almost entirely SCHOEPS microphones:

🇩🇪 Thorsten Weigelt (Berlin University of the Arts)
🇯🇵 Kazuya Nagae (Nagoya University of the Arts), Toru Kamekawa & Atsushi Marui (Tokyo University of the Arts), Shun Saito (University of Electro-Communications)
🇬🇧 Hyunkook Lee (University of Huddersfield)

The recordings made this week are the basis for future subjective evaluations – and both the results and the complete sound samples will be made publicly available.

We’re proud that our support helped make this project possible – creating open educational and research resources, also for the next generation of engineers and Tonmeister.

🎬 We also had the chance to shoot a short documentary on site – coming soon. A huge thank you to Prof. Thorsten Weigelt, his Tonmeister students, and the wonderful musicians for having us!

One sentence. It changed how Alan Meyerson records an orchestra. 🎻
At a panel, Richard King was talking about his issues with the M 50 on the Decca Tree. Meyerson walked up afterwards and asked one thing: "What should I do?"

That was King's answer. He did it. He loved it.

Three SCHOEPS MK 2S with the KA 40 sphere, LCR on the Decca Tree. Warm. Clean. No shrill top end. And they hold up when the room gets loud: "When there's some serious volume going on, they don't give up."

Scoring in Immersive Formats at Krzysztof Penderecki European Centre of Music

🎤 A few days outside of the city noise, a beautiful concert hall, and a group of composers, producers and musicians exploring immersive sound.

During the Audiovisual Forum, part of the Kraków Film Music Festival, young composers, finalists of the Young Talent Award 2026, recorded their pieces with the help of engineers Gianluca Massimo and Wil Jones (AIR Studios), with a small ensemble of strings, woodwinds, guitar, harp, piano and percussion.

Alongside classic stereo and surround techniques, the team built an immersive array based on Prof. Hyunkook Lee's ESMA-3D: six SCHOEPS MK 21 for the horizontal layer, two MK 41 for height 🎶

Successful immersive experiences start at the compositional stage. Analysing the scores and artists' intentions allowed the team to pull some elements to further enhance the experience: string harmonics played one by one around the full circle, creating a stationary movement, or woodwind breath travelling side to side

Every composer left with inspiration and their own stems, ready to experiment with their own ideas.

🎤 Thirty minutes into a soundcheck for ECM Records, Chris Allen opened his laptop and started shopping for SCHOEPS microphones. He's used them on every record since.

In this interview, recorded at NAMM 2026, the multiple Grammy Award-winning jazz recording engineer shares how a pair of CMC 6 amplifiers changed everything, from that first session with Joe Lovano's "Trio Tapestry" at Sear Sound to a workflow built entirely around the Colette series.
