Each year, Earth Day is a reminder that sustainability is becoming an essential part of how companies operate and do business. At the same time, sustainability is no longer only about compliance, it is a key driver of long-term business success, resilience, and competitiveness.

At KOSTAL Group, we embed ESG into our core business to strengthen operational performance, meet customer and regulatory expectations, and create long-term value, even in a challenging market environment. With our innovative product portfolio, from renewable energy solutions to electromobility, we’re helping shape a more sustainable future and contributing to global climate efforts.

This Earth Day, we reaffirm what we stand for in ESG: turning ambition into measurable outcomes - through energy efficiency, resource optimisation, and transparent, resilient value chains.
Ahead of our upcoming ESG Report, we’re proud to share some key progress in 2025 vs. our 2022 baseline:
• -21% Scope 1 & 2 GHG emission intensity
• -4% energy intensity
• -7% water intensity
• 45% renewable electricity share in our operations
• Improved external recognition, including EcoVadis Bronze and an upgraded CDP score to B

We also took important structural steps, initiating Science Based Targets (SBTi) development and completing our Scope 3 baseline analysis to improve full value-chain visibility.

We will continue to strive for excellence in ESG with the support of our dedicated colleagues, suppliers and partners.

Water scarcity is a growing concern worldwide, making it crucial to maximise the use of available water resources across operations and facilities - especially in light of the recent World Water Day, which highlights the importance of sustainable water management.

At KOSTAL India, water scarcity is a focus of our sustainability efforts. The site operates reverse osmosis (RO) systems, which typically discard a significant portion of input water as rejection water. This rejection water is a byproduct of the RO filtration process. Rather than discharging it into drains, KOSTAL India is focusing on opportunities to capture and reuse it for suitable non potable purposes, thereby reducing freshwater withdrawals and limiting avoidable water loss. The site also actively captures and reuses condensate water generated by its central air conditioning systems (AHUs). During peak summer months, this can amount to approximately 500–600 litres per day. After appropriate testing and treatment, we repurpose this water for toilet flushing, gardening and irrigation, floor cleaning, helping reduce our overall freshwater consumption.

Reusing RO rejection water and harvesting AC/AHU condensate represent practical, eco friendly measures that can materially reduce KOSTAL India’s water footprint and support more resilient and sustainable water management.

What does sustainability mean in the legal field? How does KOSTAL approach the integration of ESG principles into its compliance framework? What are the challenges and opportunities in the rapidly evolving regulatory landscape around sustainability?

To answer these questions, Sebastian Petrausch, Executive Vice President, Legal Department, shares his thoughts.

Our “What does sustainability mean?” series aims to open the discussion around environmental and social challenges and opportunities in our company, in our industry and globally. Being transparent and addressing important issues are part of our commitments, a cornerstone of OUR WAY to a sustainable future.
