How can tree rings reveal the impact of climate change?

Tree rings record much more than a tree's age. They preserve valuable information about how trees respond to changing environmental conditions.

In her presentation during the IRMS User Meeting, Dr. Irene Tunno (Research Institute on Terrestrial Ecosystems, CNR), introduces an innovative approach that compares conventional EA-IRMS with the latest laser ablation GHG-IRMS technology. The new method enables high-resolution isotope measurements within individual tree rings, providing unprecedented insights into seasonal growth patterns, tree physiology, and ecosystem dynamics.

By analysing carbon and oxygen isotopes in early and late wood, researchers can better understand how trees adapt to different climatic conditions and gain deeper eco-physiological insights than traditional dendrochronology alone can offer.
