Microplastics are in our water. What can we do about it?

Solving this challenge requires action at multiple levels – from reducing plastic at the source to capturing particles in wastewater and drinking water treatment systems. Membrane and adsorption technologies can help remove microplastics from water and also reduce other contaminants such as PFAS, pharmaceutical residues, and pathogens.

Our ultrafiltration membrane modules are designed exactly for this. With pore sizes of ~0.025 µm, these membranes are fine enough to retain suspended solids, microorganisms, and a large portion of microplastic particles, while allowing water and dissolved, smaller molecules to pass through.

In water treatment PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride)-based polymer membranes are quite common due to their high robustness and performance. PVDF membranes are themselves classified as PFAS – so we've gone a step further: we now offer PFAS-reduced and fluorine-free membrane materials with comparable filtration performance, for drinking water, wastewater, process water, and other liquids.

Behind the scenes: Risk engineering beyond the checklist🎬

A few weeks ago, we welcomed the team from Zurich Resilience Solutions at our headquarters in Ludwigsburg, to capture how our global risk engineering partnership comes to life in practice.

Since 2020, our teams have worked side by side with Zurich's risk engineers: on-site at our production facilities worldwide, inspecting fire protection systems, running hands-on training, reviewing every process change. Hundreds of hours of shared work that have fundamentally transformed how we think about risk.

For us managing risk is not only about protection. It is about building stronger processes, sharper awareness and better preparedness for what comes next. This is how we translate the idea of antifragility into concrete action: by using challenges as an opportunity to improve. This shared commitment to continuous improvement was recognized with the Zurich Risk Engineering Excellence Award 2025.

A partnership like this depends on people who bring expertise, commitment and a hands-on mindset. Many thanks to Monika Köth and Frank Meister Magsino, as well as Petra Riga Müller, Nader Ahmad and Robin Matthias, for driving this collaboration forward across teams and locations.

Membrane filtration in dairy plays a different role than it does in water treatment. 💡

In water applications, filtration has one role: removing unwanted substances to produce cleaner water. The permeate is the only stream of interest. In dairy, however, both permeate and retentate can contain valuable components.

Key milk components like proteins, lactose, and minerals are distributed between permeate and retentate depending on the chosen membrane size. Here, filtration doesn't just clean dairy streams; it actively defines their composition and value.
