TOMRA Recycling

TOMRA Recycling Transforming resource recovery through advanced waste and
metals sorting that turns waste into value Recycling is not a trend, it is a must.

We only have one planet, limited resources and one solution to it: Recycling. For three decades, we have been developing sensor-based sorting solutions to recover plastics, metals, paper, wood and many more materials out of waste streams and thus contribute to protecting our precious resources. Dedicated to making a difference, we partner with the entire value chain to accelerate the transition to a circular economy and give consumed materials a second, third and many more lives.

With the new FINDER™, multifunctionality isn't only mechanical. It's also digital.

Operators can track machine status, throughput, and valve performance at any time – and run sorting tasks through the machine interface or remotely across the local network. When input material shifts, settings are adjusted quickly – without needing to leave the office.

Less time spent, less effort.

FINDER™ gives recyclers the freedom to do more with one system:
➡ Run multiple sorting programs
➡ Achieve advanced material classification
➡ Reach performance targets without rethinking the entire line

Whether upgrading mixed non-ferrous material, separating metals from non-metals, recovering wires, stainless steel cleaning, or plastic sorting – FINDER™ is built for everyday metal recycling tasks.

30 years ago, we introduced the first AUTOSORT™.

It marked an important step for recycling: automated, sensor-based sorting was becoming a reality.

Equipped with optimized optoelectronics, the system used early AI principles to make basic decisions on which materials to eject or reject.

Compared with today’s AUTOSORT™, the first generation was still limited. It could perform one dedicated sorting task at a time and worked with fixed rules. Early applications included the sorting of beverage cartons and plastic bottles.

But that first step changed the direction of the industry.

What began as a dedicated optical sorting system has since evolved into a connected, multi-sensor platform used across a wide range of material streams worldwide.

In this series, we’ll look back at the milestones that shaped this journey, from the first AUTOSORT™ in 1996 to today’s intelligent sorting systems.

Because the story of AUTOSORT™ is also the story of how AI became part of modern recycling.

The next chapter of AI in recycling isn't about better detection alone.
It's about turning data into action across the entire plant.

For years, deep learning has helped sorting operations solve increasingly complex material challenges. That remains essential.

But we are now looking at the bigger picture: how AI can connect insights with operational decisions in real time.

We're entering an era where complex challenges are solved and data is understood, contextualized and communicated directly to the operator.

At IFAT 2026, we unveiled new AI capabilities through PolyPerception's agent-based platform and expanded the GAINnext™ ecosystem with three new deep learning applications.

Together, these innovations help translate advanced AI into real, measurable value for customers.

A new chapter for TOMRA Recycling in the Americas.

In April, we officially opened our Test and Training Center in Charlotte. 4,500 ft² / 425 m² of dedicated space – equipped with our latest advanced waste sorting technology, including the multifunctional AUTOSORT™, deep learning solution GAINnext™, flake sorting systems AUTOSORT™ FLAKE and INNOSORT™ FLAKE, and PolyPerception's Waste Analyzer.

From the first material test to after-sales training and ongoing performance optimization, our team in Charlotte is here to support our customers every step of the way.

Michelle Landon, SVP and Head of Americas: "Our new Test & Training Center is about more than space or equipment. It's about a deeper level of support for our customers in the Americas – supporting them throughout the full lifecycle of their machines, from the first conversation and initial material tests to after-sales trainings and optimization for continuously high plant performance."

As one of seven TOMRA Test & Training Centers worldwide, the Charlotte facility brings our global expertise directly to recyclers in the Americas.

The new AI-native platform by our partner PolyPerception is an exciting step forward for intelligence in recycling plants. Now you have the chance to see it in action.

Operators can interact directly with their plant data by simply chatting with the system in plain language. This makes it easier to identify materials, analyze performance, and respond to performance changes, for example by generating quality reports and alerts.

If you would like to see how this works, we’re hosting two exclusive demo sessions:

Metal recycling operations don't stand still. Material streams change, targets shift, and the systems running your line need to keep up.

That's the thinking behind the new FINDER™ - a complete system update combining mechanical, pneumatic, and software improvements in one modular platform.

Its flexible sensor architecture lets you configure the right combination for your specific application. A new-generation electromagnetic sensor works together with other detection technologies for higher sorting accuracy, while redesigned valve blocks improve recovery and reduce energy consumption at the same time.

And for the people actually maintaining these machines day to day: We have made maintenance significantly less of a headache - simplified access, faster valve exchange, less downtime.

The new FINDER™. Higher precision. Higher recovery. Less operational complexity. Learn more: https://www.tomra.com/waste-metal-recycling/products/machines/finder
