🔴 According to VDA 4994, the global automotive transport label standard used by most EU OEMs states that the label on a component is not packaging.

It is a data carrier. It must be machine-readable at every touchpoint in the supply chain: goods receipt, inbound logistics, trackside delivery, and final assembly.

💡 A common label, standard paper, general-purpose adhesive, retail-grade barcode, is not designed for this. It is not designed for engine bay temperatures that reach 150°C. It is not designed for contact with the cutting fluids, lubricants, and solvents present on every automotive production floor. And it is not printed to the barcode quality grade that automated OEM receiving systems require.

Industrial labels exist because automotive environments are not office environments. The difference isn't cosmetic. It's engineered, in the adhesive, the face material, the barcode print quality, and the data structure. 💪

⁉ The question every supplier should ask before their next label order: does this label meet the necessary standards? If the answer is uncertain, that uncertainty has a cost.

🟡 Quiz: 4 EU regulations govern your vehicle's signage. How many does your fleet actually meet?

There are 4 distinct EU regulatory frameworks that govern vehicle signage on commercial vehicles. Most fleet operators know one — maybe two. This quick checklist covers all four. Based on official EU and UNECE sources. How many can you confirm for your fleet? 😮

ECE-R104 — Material compliance
✅ Does your retroreflective tape carry the E-mark?
✅ Is it Class C certified and 50–60mm wide?
✅ Red at the rear, yellow/white on the sides?

ECE-R48 Rev.13 — Installation compliance
✅ Is the tape placed within the required height range (250mm–1,500mm from ground)?
✅ Does your trailer cover at least 80% of its side length?
✅ If registered after Jan 2025 (O3/O4): does it have synchronized side lighting?

ADR 2025 — Dangerous goods (if applicable)
✅ Do you carry orange plates (front + rear) when transporting dangerous goods?
✅ Are your hazard diamonds (placards) the correct class and correctly placed?

🟡 Every two years, ADR is updated. In 2025, three things changed that directly affect how dangerous Every two years, ADR is updated. In 2025, three things changed that directly affect how dangerous goods vehicles must be marked and equipped.

According to the ADR 2025 framework :

1️⃣Fire extinguishers — revised volume ratios based on vehicle gross weight. Your current extinguisher may no longer be sufficient. Check the ADR 2025 table.

2️⃣ Spill kits — vehicles carrying Class 3 flammable liquids now require a mandatory spill containment kit on board. Not just placards — physical equipment.

3️⃣Tremcards — QR-code based transport emergency cards are now accepted. A printed copy must still be carried in the vehicle.

What didn't change: orange plate placement, hazard diamond requirements, and HIN/UN number display rules remain as in previous ADR editions.
