Proudly supporting landmark maize immunity research published in Advanced Science on March 16, 2026! The study, titled “Integrated Single-Cell and Spatial Transcriptomics Reveal Cell-type-specific Immune Regulatory Networks in Maize Responding to Southern Corn Rust”, unlocks key insights into maize defense against southern corn rust.

With BMKGENE’s single-nucleus transcriptome and BMKMANU S1000 spatial transcriptome sequencing & analysis services, the team constructed a high-resolution spatiotemporal atlas, mapped 8 leaf cell types of transcriptional dynamics, identified epidermal/mesophyll cells’ core roles in early immunity, and pinpointed ZmXET1/ZmRBG as key resistance genes—valuable for disease-resistant breeding.

“Partial redundancy buffers deleterious effects of mutating DNA methyltransferase 1-1 (MET1-1) in polyploid wheat”, Journal of Experimental Botany.

Deleting DNA methyltransferases is lethal in diploid crops, blocking breeders from harnessing epigenetic variation.

Our teams exploited wheat’s polyploid cushion, creating CRISPR alleles of MET1-1 in tetraploid and hexaploid lines. We tracked genotype ratios in segregating seeds, quantified CG methylation by whole-genome bisulfite sequencing, and assayed global expression with RNA-seq.

Viable plants carrying up to four mutant copies showed stepwise loss of CG methylation and dosage-dependent gene de-repression yet transmitted heritable shifts in flowering time and awn length that assorted independently of the targeted locus. This demonstrates that polyploidy can titrate epigenetic strength without killing the plant, opening a new, non-transgenic route for fine-tuning complex agronomic traits.
