Light-flooded learning spaces in the making!

We recently visited the site of the former VIVO shopping mall in Hamburg-Ottensen, which is currently being transformed into a brand-new district school (Stadtteilschule) by SBH | Schulbau Hamburg and agn Leusmann architects.

The highlight of the day? Watching the precision work behind the installation of the massive glass roof by Lamilux featuring our OKASOLAR 3D.

Materiality in motion

The extension and refurbishment of the Myer Music Centre at Melbourne Grammar School carefully reinterprets a listed 1960s building for contemporary use. The architectural redevelopment by Peter Elliott Architecture + Urban Design combines historic substance with new spaces for teaching, rehearsal and performance.

A defining feature of the project are the continuous façade bands made with OKATECH Copper, which allow the distinctive butterfly roof to appear almost weightless. The expanded metal meshes integrated into the insulating glass filter daylight, provide privacy and create changing perceptions of depth and materiality throughout the day.

Together with our Australian representative Architectural Glass & Cladding, we were pleased to contribute to the realization of this architecturally refined façade solution.

Wood, light and shared spaces

With the “Haus der Begegnung”, the municipality of Grünwald has created a place where housing, care, social services and public life come together within a cohesive architectural concept. The ensemble by Goergens Miklautz Partner is defined by green courtyards, open circulation areas and transparent transitions between private and communal spaces.

A defining element of the project is the use of OKAWOOD White Seraya insulating glass with integrated timber structures. Positioned within the cavity, the delicate wooden grid filters sunlight depending on the angle of incidence and provides effective glare protection while maintaining daylight quality and visual transparency.

The material combination of glass and wood contributes to the calm and welcoming atmosphere of the complex and supports the architectural intention of creating spaces for encounter, exchange and everyday interaction across generations.

BIG SEE Festival 2026 – Daylight as a design parameter

How much is enough? This question lies at the centre of the BIG SEE Festival 2026, taking place on 21–22 May in Portorož, Slovenia. For the first time, architecture and product design are brought together in a shared format – inviting a more deliberate approach to resources, function and expression.

We will be on site and invite you to visit us at stand no. 8. OKALUX will present daylight systems that position natural light as an integral part of architectural design.

In increasingly compact building envelopes, daylight becomes a parameter that can be precisely controlled. Our systems support the balanced interplay of light guidance, glare control and solar gains – aligned with spatial use and architectural intent.

The festival takes place within the spaces of a former salt warehouse and brings together conference, exhibition and exchange formats in a platform focused on relevance rather than spectacle.

We look forward to the exchange.

Bringing old and new into balance

The new Ludwig-Uhland primary school in Nuremberg integrates precisely into the existing campus while further developing it. Designed by Bär Stadelmann Stöcker Architekten, the building responds to the listed historic structure in scale, proportion and materiality, creating a dialogue between old and new.

Daylight plays a key role: in the roof of the central atrium, OKASOLAR S was installed – enabling balanced light distribution with a partial through-vision and the need for artificial lighting.

Together with the ongoing refurbishment of the historic building, a cohesive ensemble is taking shape – creating a strong foundation for contemporary, full-day education.

Where heritage meets new learning spaces

How do you expand a historic school in the middle of the city without losing its character? The extension of Fort Street Public School in Sydney by FJMT shows a clear and thoughtful approach.

On Observatory Hill, existing buildings and new structures come together through courtyards, open views and well-planned connections to the city and harbour. The result is a campus that feels connected and easy to navigate.

A key feature is the façade realized by our Australian representative Architectural Glass & Cladding: OKATECH Copper turns it into a subtle daylight filter. The integrated expanded metal within the insulating glass reacts to changing light, giving the building a warm and calm appearance throughout the day while meeting functional needs.

World Art Day – spaces for the arts

On 15 April, World Art Day highlights the importance of art and creative practice. The Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University illustrates how architecture can support and shape these processes.

Designed by Steven Holl Architects in collaboration with BNIM Architects, four distinct building volumes with individual spatial concepts are brought together through a shared forum and a central plaza, forming a coherent architectural composition.

Daylight plays a key role in the overall design approach. OKALUX Evo contributes with an insulating glass that integrates a capillary system and a translucent glassfibre tissue interlayer. This combination gently diffuses daylight and guides it deep into the interior, creating balanced lighting conditions while maintaining visual privacy. At the same time, the visible capillary structure gives the façade a subtle and lively texture.

Light in balance

The new sports hall of the Waldorf School in Detmold is defined by a clearly structured volume, carefully set into the landscape. A generous south-facing façade opens the interior to its surroundings, while the more closed sides towards the street create a calm and protective frame. Timber and a green roof highlight the project’s sustainable approach, designed by Schröder-Kaiser Architekten.

Inside, the hall offers 565 m² of space with a clear height of over seven metres, suitable for competitive sports. Additional areas include changing rooms, technical facilities, a multifunctional room and a gymnastics space. By omitting suspended ceilings, the structure remains visible and gives the space a direct and honest character.

The façade is precisely composed: translucent and transparent elements work together to guide daylight and shape the atmosphere of the interior.

OKALUX K plays a key role in this concept. The triple insulating glass with an integrated capillary panel diffuses daylight evenly across the space, ensuring glare-free and uniformly lit interiors. This enhances visual comfort while supporting the building’s thermal performance.

A space designed for movement, community and everyday use.

Daylight that performs 🎾

At the GC Section Couvert Tennis Hall in Zurich, daylight now plays a key role in performance and comfort. As part of the refurbishment of the historic hall (1930), the skylight concept was completely rethought to address overheating in summer and energy loss in winter.

With OKALUX+, a precisely balanced daylighting solution was realized. The light-diffusing insulating glass with capillary core ensures uniform, shadow-free illumination of the courts—independent of changing sunlight conditions. At the same time, it provides very good glare protection and high visual comfort, essential for sports use.

The design by Widmer de Montmollin Architekten integrates seamlessly into the existing structure, enhancing both the clarity of the architecture and the overall spatial quality.

Precision as a Position

The company building of XELLAR Technologies stands for architecture defined by clarity and technical consistency. Precise proportions, generous glazing and a carefully placed colour accent shape the building’s character.

With OKASOLAR F, the façade combines openness with controlled daylight management. Fixed, three-dimensionally formed, highly reflective lamellae within the insulating glass provide direction-selective solar control, guide daylight deep into the interior and offer partial visual and glare protection – all within particularly slim glazing build-ups.

A building that brings engineering thinking, light and architectural clarity into focus.
