The sun’s position changes throughout the day, which directly affects how satellite images look and what details they reveal. ⠀

👉 Low sun angles light scenes from the side rather than from above, which is why early-morning or late-afternoon satellite images show texture more clearly than midday images. ⠀

This can reveal vehicle tracks in the mud or sand, small vegetation, or rough surfaces.⠀⠀

💡 Just in 2025, Europe raised €45bn for new wind projects and installed 19.1 GW of new wind capacity. ⠀

As offshore energy scales, satellite imagery insights are critical for Maritime Spatial Planning, infrastructure security, and environmental oversight. ⠀
🔹 mapping of individual turbine locations and layouts ⠀
🔹 detection of new installations or construction activity ⠀
🔹 monitoring vessel presence around critical infrastructure ⠀
🔹 assessing spatial interactions with shipping lanes and other sea uses ⠀

High-quality data enables better decisions in increasingly crowded and strategic maritime spaces. ⠀

Mapping: Should you choose aerial or satellite sensors? 🤔

It’s true that aerial imagery offers higher resolution thanks to a lower altitude. However…

Typical LPIS or regional survey requirements are 30–50 cm GSD, which is well within the capabilities of some European satellite solution provider.

EUSI even provides 15 cm HD imagery for large-scale mapping projects.

💡 What is HD?

Satellite images are collected at the native resolution of 30 cm and further enhanced by Maxar’s proprietary HD (High-Definition) technology.

The technology intelligently increases the number of pixels through a complex mathematical model and results in 15 cm imagery.

The same process can be applied to native 40–60 cm imagery to render a 30 cm HD image.

The very high resolution will allow you to digitalise land parcels, calculate surface, identify crops, monitor hedges, and much more.

Satellite imagery can significantly increase maritime situational awareness in the High North, particularly thanks to:

🛰️ Easy access to remote areas
🛰️ Large area coverage
🛰️ No local personnel

Contrary to aircraft, which have been reporting GPS jamming over certain locations in Northern Europe, satellites are completely unaffected by borders, terrain, or other geopolitical restrictions.

They can collect hundreds of square kilometres in one shot, no matter how remote the area.

Satellite imagery at 30–50 cm resolution gives you the necessary detail to identify, analyse and monitor vessels as well as ice conditions, leading to:

➡️ Evidence-based decision-making for maritime governance
➡️ Enforcement of maritime regulations and transit rules
➡️ Objective, persistent record of activity, including documentation of foreign vessels in national waters
➡️ Lower reliance on costly aerial patrols
➡️ And much more

On Friday, we delivered satellite imagery of a fire in Tuscany to Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping, an EU programme that uses images like these for wildfire extent emergency mapping and damage assessment.

The fire, driven by strong winds, has been active since 28 April 2026.

For a few months, sea ice in the Arctic becomes navigable and opens short operational windows for maritime activity. And with them, new risks.

Arctic regions remain:

️❄️ Vast and difficult to patrol
❄️ Exposed to harsh and unpredictable weather
❄️ Limited in search and rescue, and environmental response capabilities

That makes any incident – especially involving aging or non-ice-class vessels – potentially catastrophic.

Very High Resolution satellite imagery helps with that.

With 30 cm resolution, it's possible to:

🛰️ Detect vessels in remote Arctic waters
🛰️ Identify ship classes, from icebreakers to oil tankers
🛰️ Observe deck features and vessel configuration
🛰️ Monitor activity even when AIS signals go dark

It's essential for safety, security, and environmental protection to keep persistent situational awareness of the Arctic, and satellite imagery is a safe and efficient way to do it.

A remote Spanish airport became a temporary parking lot for aircraft that is stranded in Europe due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

We collected satellite imagery of the Teruel Airport in Spain with the Vantor WorldView Legion satellite. ⬇️

With 18° ONA and 30 cm resolution, you can clearly see airline names on aircraft from Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, Edelweiss, and Etihad.

Conflicts and disasters come with damage to buildings and infrastructure, followed by months of repairing and re-building. ⠀

➡️ Satellite images are an effective tool to monitor the damage and subsequent reconstruction. ⠀
