Magnesia-based technology for mine water treatment.

Our partner PMAP has developed a technology for mine water treatment using an MgO-based reagent developed and patented by Baymag, a member of the Refratechnik Group.

An estimated 16 billion tons of tailings are generated globally each year. The PMAP process combines patented MgO-based chemistry with in-situ delivery for mine water management. An Unmanned Smart Dispensing Vessel (USDV) uses autonomous operation and artificial intelligence to dispense the reagent directly at the treatment site.

The technology also addresses critical mineral recovery from mine water, creating a potential route for recovering valuable materials during treatment. This connects water treatment with resource recovery while reducing the environmental liabilities associated with mine water and tailings.

One last piece before ALUMINIUM 2026 wraps up. 🧩

Three days in Düsseldorf have given us plenty to take back with us, along with some great moments spent together as an industry.

And somewhere between the exhibits and meetings, there was even time to put a few pieces together. Quite literally. 😉

Day 2 at ALUMINIUM 2026

Global exhibitions like ALUMINIUM create a different setting for the industry. Away from the usual schedules and day-to-day work, there is time to reconnect with familiar faces, meet new ones and trade stories in a more relaxed environment.

That has been the atmosphere on Day 2 at ALUMINIUM 2026 in Düsseldorf. Our team has been enjoying the time with customers, partners and colleagues from the aluminium industry.

The doors are open at ALUMINIUM 2026.

Day one is underway in Düsseldorf, and booth 6D41 has become our visitors’ Home of Refractories for the next three days.

Our team is presenting refractory materials and lining systems for aluminium production, with different concepts and applications on display at the booth.

We look forward to meeting more customers, partners, and industry colleagues over the next two days.

Heat-up time is part of refractory performance.

In Aluminium recycling and melting furnaces, the time required before operation resumes also depends on the refractory heat-up. With REFRACAST®️ Hybrid B-90 AL, the furnace can be reheated within 48 hours, regardless of the quantity used, without the usual 24-hour air-drying period for hydraulic bonded monolithics.

This sol-gel bonded castable is used as a wear lining in the bath area, including the ramp sill and belly band, where chemical attack and mechanical loads are high at elevated temperatures. With a maximum continuous working temperature of 1.250°C, the well-established anti wetting additive prevents corundum formation on and within the castable whilst showing excellent anti sticking properties against liquid Aluminium.

The shorter heat-up time also reduces energy consumption and CO₂ emissions during heat-up by up to 70% compared with conventional cementitious castables.

We're looking forward to the ILA 2026 General Assembly & Symposium in Barcelona, where members of the global lime industry will come together to exchange information and experiences.

On October 7, Michael Hünerlage will contribute to the Technology & Innovation Panel with his presentation: “Refractory Performance in Lime Kilns: A Post-Mortem Perspective.” The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A.
