REFRA-Engineering: Top Performance for High-Temperature Processes.

The purpose of refractory engineering is to understand the harsh environment within a high-temperature unit and to improve its process adaptability, consistency, and reliability.

Successful project implementation relies on effective time management and minimizing uncertainty. Our extensive industry know-how and advanced design tools allow us to approach those projects more efficiently. Using 3D engineering, heat transfer calculations, and virtual reality, we can map out a complete installation before laying a single brick. Visualizing complex details in a virtual space clarifies workflows, making complex details transparent and keeping projects on track while reducing unforeseen delays.

When we eliminate the guesswork from the design stage, we deliver durable, resource-efficient solutions that adapt flexibly to different requirements.

Refratechnik at the Indonesia Critical Minerals Conference 2026.

We are pleased to announce that the Refratechnik Group is participating in the Indonesia Critical Minerals Conference (ICM 2026) in Jakarta, 3–5 June 2026.

ICM 2026 brings together the full value chain of Indonesia’s rapidly growing critical minerals sector — and magnesia plays a central role in that story. High-purity MgO is an essential reagent in HPAL precipitation processes, and as Indonesia’s nickel and MHP industry continues to scale, reliable, non-Chinese sources of process-grade magnesia are becoming increasingly strategic.

Our team attending the conference:
Maryam Jafari, P.Eng Jafari – Business Development Manager, Baymag
Suren Dias-Jayasinha – Head of Sales & Marketing, QMAG
Andrew Ollier - Managing Director Refratechnik Asia
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Franz X. Spachtholz – Managing Director, Refratechnik Holding
Dr. Christoph Beyer – Managing Director, QMAG

We are particularly keen to connect with nickel producers, MHP operators, and project developers across Indonesia’s HPAL landscape to explore how our high-purity cryptocrystalline magnesia products can support your precipitation requirements — from process optimization to supply security.

If you would like to arrange a meeting on the sidelines of the conference, please reach out to any of us directly.

Please visit Dr. Christoph Beyer's Keynote Speech on the 4th of June:
"QMAG - Market Leader of Calcined Magnesia for Nickel/Cobalt MHP Production"

We look forward to the conversations ahead.

Reducing the carbon footprint of cement depends on what we can change on the production floor, day by day.

From June 14 to 17, the Refratechnik Asia team will be in Bangkok, Thailand, for Cemtech Asia 2026. This event is a great opportunity to catch up with regional producers and look past the usual corporate talking points to focus on the practicalities of the circular economy and alternative fuels.

A lot of these big decarbonization goals depend entirely on the reliability of the refractory lining underneath it all. Finding that balance between sustainability and thermal stability is a challenge we're all facing, and we look forward to exploring those practical engineering solutions with you in Bangkok.

The use of alternative fuels, such as biomass, refuse-derived fuel (RDF), and waste-derived fuels, in cement, lime, and pulp and paper kilns significantly changes their internal atmosphere. This process introduces high concentrations of alkalis, sulfur, and chlorides, which vaporize, condense, and repeatedly cycle mainly in the calcining zone, and upper and lower transition zones. This creates intense chemical infiltration and thermo-chemical corrosion pressure on the refractory lining.

TOPMAG® AF is our magnesia-fused spinel grade formulation designed for these conditions. Its chrome ore-free composition meets safety regulations and fulfills the technical requirements of preserving structural stability under sustained thermal loads, resisting alkali salt and chemical permeation.

Constants in the transformation? Yes, they exist.
One of them is torpedo ladles.

From the very beginning, they have been an indispensable element in the integrated steel production. Torpedo ladles travel long distances across the plant, operate reliably, and are essential for the safe containment and transport of hot metal.

Not everything changes, even though the steel industry is undergoing the greatest transformation in its history.

While the main task remains clear, transporting and storing liquid hot metal over long periods, torpedo ladles have long been doing more than that. They perform metallurgical process steps, act as a thermal buffer, and must ensure the highest level of energy efficiency. They must not run out of energy.

This is exactly where Refratechnik comes in.

We develop tailor-made lining concepts that optimally align the entire system of insulating, permanent, and wear linings. With our premium products, which combine top-quality products such as REFRALUSIT®, KRONEX®, REFRAL® and ALUCARBON®, we ensure that torpedo ladles accompany liquid metal across the plant not only safely, but also energy-efficiently: cost‑optimized and perfectly matched to the individual operational workflow.

Transformation does not mean doing everything anew. Transformation means further developing what has proven itself. Refratechnik accompanies you on this path.

MAGFORUM 2026 placed the magnesia value chain under a clear lens. From global supply and logistics to the standing of magnesia as a strategic mineral, the programme brought a purposeful tone for the industry.

Refratechnik was represented by colleagues from Refratechnik Holding, Baymag, QMAG, and our partner PMAP in the field of mine tailings. In his role as President of the World Refractories Association, Dr. Rainer Gaebel contributed to the session on the impact of raw materials on the product carbon footprint of refractories. Professor Dr. Franz X. Spachtholz participated in the keynote discussion panel, "Weathering the Storm," where he talked about trade flows, energy costs, and the implications of mineral status for magnesia.

As Lunch Sponsor on Tuesday, Refratechnik supported the forum’s networking among producers, traders, processors, and end users. MAGFORUM once again confirmed that the future of magnesia depends on coordinated action through every stage of the magnesia value chain.

Update: New Press Line in Gochsheim!

On November 7, 2025, we officially inaugurated the new press line 4 at our plant in Gochsheim, Germany.

From day one, the new press line has fully delivered on its promises, achieving impressive results.
Significantly shorter cycle times translate into an 18% increase in productivity, while specific energy consumption has been reduced by nearly 40%.

We are very proud of this project and would like to sincerely thank Langzauner and everyone involved for their outstanding contribution to this success.
