Winter shows which truck parts were already weak.

A battery that started the engine without complaint in September can fail on the first cold morning. Water in the compressed air system can freeze in a valve. Paraffin in diesel fuel can block the fuel filter.

Used, reconditioned or new? A simple way to decide.

The right choice depends on two things: how much service life the vehicle still has, and how the part failed.

Vehicle has more than five years ahead of it and the part is the heart of the engine
-> New original, or reconditioned

Vehicle is eight years or older and the part only has to keep it running until replacement
-> Used, tested

The part is out of production, or the delivery time from the manufacturer runs into weeks
-> Used or reconditioned, usually available from stock

The part is a housing or a casting that does not wear
-> Used, at a fraction of the new price

As a rule of thumb, a tested used part costs about a third of a new original and a reconditioned part about half, and delivery is often faster because the part is already on the shelf.

There is a second argument that rarely makes it into the calculation. Reconditioning an engine block or a cylinder head uses a fraction of the energy needed to cast, forge and machine a new one. The steel and the aluminium stay in service instead of going through the furnace. Multiplied by the thousands of parts that change hands every year in the European truck fleet, the effect is larger than most fleet CO2 programmes. It is also the most practical form of sustainability: the part is cheaper, it is available now, and it keeps a vehicle in operation that would otherwise have to be replaced early.
