Forget Water Beading – Discover Hydrophilic Self-Cleaning Technology

When people think about self-cleaning glass, they usually think about water-repellent coatings. Water beads up. Water rolls off. Problem solved.

Or is it?

Many of the world's most successful self-cleaning architectural glass systems actually use the opposite approach: hydrophilic self-cleaning technology.

Instead of forming droplets, water spreads into a thin, continuous film that helps remove dust, dirt and airborne pollutants more evenly across the entire surface. Combined with photocatalytic TiO₂ technology, organic contamination is continuously broken down by daylight and can then be washed away more effectively by rain.

Cleaning in hospitality is far more than just a cost factor.

A recent article in the Finnish hospitality magazine Vitriini highlights how restaurants in Oulu are successfully using nano surface protection technology manufactured by CCM together with the biodegradable Biosativa cleaner.

What if water becomes a key KPI for solar parks?

A recent report from the UK caught our attention.

According to media reports, a solar park in Kent used substantial amounts of water for panel cleaning during a period of regional water shortages.
Regardless of the specific circumstances, the story highlights an issue that I believe will become increasingly important for the solar industry.

How do we maintain maximum energy output while reducing water consumption and operating costs?

Most discussions around solar focus on energy generation.
Much less attention is given to what happens during the 25–30 years of operation.
Dust, pollen, industrial emissions and other contaminants continuously accumulate on solar panels. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA PVPS), soiling-related losses can reduce annual energy production by approximately 4–7% on average worldwide.

To avoid these losses, operators often rely on regular cleaning cycles.

For utility-scale solar parks this can mean:
🔴 Significant water consumption
🔴 Higher O&M costs
🔴 More maintenance interventions
🔴 Additional operational complexity

As solar capacity continues to grow globally, I believe the conversation will increasingly shift from simply maximizing energy output to optimizing the entire lifecycle performance of solar assets.

This includes:
✅ Water efficiency
✅ Maintenance optimization
✅ Resource management
✅ Long-term operational sustainability

Technologies that reduce dirt adhesion and extend cleaning intervals may therefore become increasingly relevant for asset managers, EPCs and O&M providers.

The future of solar energy will not only be measured by how much electricity is generated.

It will also be measured by how efficiently we manage resources throughout the lifetime of the asset.
