Solar Cooling Engineering Local production of solar powered cooling solutions for agricultural value chains

The solar-powered milk-cooling system was conceptualised by the University of Hohenheim, Germany, with funding support from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Implementation in Tunisia was embedded in the GIZ programmes ‘Innovation Transfer into Agriculture – Adaptation to Climate Ch

ange’ (ITAACC) and ‘Sustainable Energy for Food – Powering Agriculture’. The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) and the National Agricultural Research Institute of Tunisia (INRAT) coordinate the project at national level. The pilot testing in Kenya is funded by the Programme of Accompanying Research for Agricultural Innovation (PARI) while the coordination is carried out by the GIZ programs ‘Green Innovation Center for the Agriculture and Food Sector’ and ‘Sustainable Energy for Food – Powering Agriculture’. Besides the aim to assess the potential and acceptance of the system under real conditions, business models are studied which would allow the introduction of the technology with locally produced components.
