Today marks an important moment for rail travel between the Netherlands and Germany: A special train on the route Groningen–Bunde–Leer–Weener celebrates the start of service on parts of the 173 kilometre “Wunderline” corridor and highlights the role of the sbp Friesen Bridge over the River Ems in reconnecting the route.

sbp provided the structural engineering for the Friesen Bridge near Weener, which forms part of the rail link between Leer in East Frisia and Groningen in the Netherlands. After a cargo ship collided with the old bridge and partially destroyed the overpass, a complete replacement was required. The new structure has been designed as a lift and turn bridge that connects to the existing foreshore bridges, with two fixed superstructures on the Weener and Ihrhove sides and a movable swing section with a pivot pier on the Ihrhove side to keep the navigation channel clear. Deep foundation piers on land and shallow foundation piers in the river support the new superstructures, and the bridge also includes a footpath and cycle path as well as a separate service and rescue route.

High accuracy requirements and poor subsoil conditions near the coast, and their influence on the rotation of the bridge, presented particular technical challenges and were carefully analysed as part of the planning process.

Client: DB Netz AG
Ex*****on: ARGE Adam Hörnig & MCE
Concept design: Marx Krontal Partner

Collaboration: KV Ingenieure GmbH

With the Friesen Bridge complete and the Wunderline gradually entering service, the rail connection between the Netherlands and Germany is being rebuilt and local access across the River Ems is significantly improved. We wish everyone on today’s special train a smooth and enjoyable journey.

Sometimes the best news comes in pairs: Two projects to which sbp contributed key bridge structures have received the 2026 American Society of Landscape Architects Honor Award:

- Guangming Mountain Forest Greenway – Bridging City and Canopy, Shenzhen, China
- Gathering Place, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA

The ASLA Professional Awards honor outstanding landscape architecture projects worldwide and highlight exemplary collaboration between landscape architects, engineers, architects, and clients. They also recognize designs that strengthen long-term, sustainable relationships between cities, people, and ecosystems.

Within Guangming Mountain Forest Greenway, sbp designed key bridge structures that carry visitors into the forest canopy and establish a continuous connection between city and landscape. The bridges integrate environmental technologies such as solar panels and protect sensitive woodland habitats with their lightweight footprints while creating a highly accessible, nature-based public destination.

At Gathering Place, sbp designed the Williams Crossing pedestrian bridge, creating a 1,440-foot link across the Arkansas River and connecting the park to an extended waterfront trail network. Together with extensive new plantings, wetland gardens, and re-shaped topography, the bridge supports access to high-quality public green space and a renewed riverfront.

Konstanz has a striking hybrid timber and concrete structure that now marks the entrance to the city: the Panorama Konstanz, engineered by schlaich bergermann partner and opened to the public on 12 September 2026.

The new exhibition building brings together history, art and architecture in a unique spatial experience. At its heart is the monumental 360° panorama by Yadegar Asisi and his studio asisi, staging the historic Council of Konstanz. The central panoramic space is a large-volume, almost column-free interior with a 15 m high staircase tower, complemented by exhibition areas, a multifunctional space and a restaurant with a wrap-around terrace offering views over Konstanz and Lake Konstanz.

The structure is realised as a hybrid construction: a solid reinforced-concrete base carries the prefabricated timber superstructure. Coloured expanded-metal façade elements shape the appearance of the 52.5 m high cylindrical volume and give it a dynamic and unmistakable character. Due to challenging subsoil conditions, the building is founded on bored piles up to 42.5 m in length.

We are proud to have contributed to this ambitious project with preliminary and design engineering, approval planning (concrete and timber structures), ex*****on planning (concrete), and consulting for ex*****on planning (timber).

Congratulations to Panorama Konstanz GmbH & Co. KG, Sauerbruch Hutton and everyone involved for bringing this exceptional project to life.

Engineering a new chapter for PFC Levski: schlaich bergermann partner is supporting the structural design of the new Georgi Asparuhov Stadium in Sofia.

Together with PFC Levski Sofia and IPA Architecture and more, we are contributing our structural engineering expertise to the realization of the project.

Our scope focuses on the optimization of the structural design for the new Georgi Asparuhov Stadium, which is being developed to meet UEFA Category 4 standards and the additional requirements for hosting UEFA Champions League league-phase matches. Together with the project team, we are working to ensure an efficient, robust and buildable structure that supports the stadium’s distinctive architectural features, including its extensive digital facade and year-round use.

With a planned capacity of up to 27,826 seats and a multifunctional program that extends beyond match days, the new Georgi Asparuhov Stadium aims to become one of the most modern sports venues in Southeastern Europe, combining top-level international football standards with the identity and community of PFC Levski.

We look forward to continuing our contribution to this next chapter in Levski’s history.

Two decades of stadium innovation in one lecture: Christoph Paech, Managing Director at sbp, takes the stage at the eps Arena Summit at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt am Main on September 24, 2026 at 1:30 PM (local time), where he will give his lecture "Structural design yesterday, today and tomorrow". The lecture will be held in German.

Ahead of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, a new generation of stadiums emerged in Germany, venues that still host world-class sports and concerts by global megastars today. Twenty years on, stadium design faces new structural demands: multifunctionality, sustainability and event loads have moved into focus, reshaping how arena structures are conceived. Christoph will share insights from sbp's decades of stadium engineering and offer an outlook on what the future of venue structures might bring.

Now under way in Toulouse, the Marengo Multimodal Transport Hub is set to become one of France’s largest public buildings with exposed mass timber.

As structural engineers for the expansive roof, we are pushing timber to deliver long spans, and a complex variable shape that unites both constructability and architectural vision, supported by parametric and BIM modelling and BIM.

Architecturally, Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and A+ Architecture are creating an ambitious roofscape that unites rail, metro, bus, cycling and office uses into a welcoming transport hub at the eastern edge of Gare Matabiau. Our structural concept supports this vision while keeping the timber structure clear, robust and economical.

Project partners:
Client: Région Occitanie, Toulouse Métropole, Europolia – ARC Occitanie
Architects: Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and A+ Architecture
Structural engineering: schlaich bergermann partner
