𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 at AEMET - Agencia Estatal de Meteorología
𝗢𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗼 at the Izaña Atmospheric Observatory (2,370 m above sea level), freezing fog and strong winds coated our BTS Solar (www.gigahertz-optik.com/en-us/product/bts-solar) spectroradiometer in a thick layer of ice.

Extreme and rapidly changing weather conditions are not unusual at this high-altitude research site above the cloud layer. Rapid temperature changes, strong winds and supercooled fog can quickly form ice on exposed instruments – as you can see in the pictures.
During the period of particularly heavy icing, the movement of the system was temporarily stopped as a precaution.
The BTS Solar itself remained fully active and continued monitoring conditions.
𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝘆:
As the temperature increased very rapidly, the ice disappeared just as fast.
The additional image shows the BTS Solar completely ice-free again — taken yesterday, only 24 hours later.
Our BTS Solar measures direct spectral solar irradiance and supports atmospheric parameters such as total ozone column (TOC) and aerosol optical depth (AOD).
High-altitude research sites like Izaña provide exceptionally clean atmospheric conditions—making them ideal for long-term solar radiation monitoring, even when winter briefly takes over.

Icy deployment at -40°C ❄️

North of the Arctic Circle, our BTS-Solar defies the harsh realities of the Arctic. In temperatures as low as -40°C, frigid air, and endless polar silence, it demonstrates the true capabilities of our technology.

In the late 1990s, Gigahertz-Optik began series production, expanded its portfolio, and in 2001 founded its US subsidiary in Massachusetts, which remains successful and still enhances activities. This marked Gigahertz-Optik's international expansion, and it began to further conquer the global market for light measurement technology.
With the development of the first spectral systems, we laid the foundation for a new generation of light measurement technology.
