In screen printing you can use retarders to achieve a significantly slower evaporation rate, helping to keep the mesh open longer – a crucial factor when printing fine details and halftones.
At the same time, they influence:
- Drying speed
- Block resistance
- Ink viscosity
Retarders are typically added to thinners when higher print quality or slower production speeds are required.
Important: Selection should always be aligned with the ink system and substrate to ensure optimal adhesion and performance.

Retarders slow down ink drying in screen and pad printing and they fundamentally influence flow, leveling, and process stability. In this video Dimitri Adler gives you an overview about the different Marabu retarders and their added value. For example the retarders SV3 vs. SV5 can behave very differently, especially in terms of retardation intensity and consistency.

Understanding these nuances is key when tuning formulations or optimizing application processes. Small changes can have a big impact on the final result.

Adding thinners to screen printing inks can affect their performance in many ways, such as viscosity, flow properties, mesh opening, drying speed, block resistance, and solvent and dissolving power. To improve ink flow on the screen and ensure sufficient printing of fine details, add thinner to your two-component screen printing ink. This video shows the impact of thinner on the viscosity of screen printing ink. If you use thinner, stir well and add the appropriate amount to the ink. The Marabu Corporate Sales & Marketing Meeting took place this week at our headquarters in Tamm and Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany. Our management and sales teams from our subsidiaries around the world visited to discuss the latest printing trends, Marabu ink systems, and more. There was also time for team activities, such as Escape the Forest in Stuttgart. The meeting was helpful for us all as we continue to strive to be an innovative ink manufacturer and top service partner for our customers worldwide.
