Niels Nørregaard has spent decades working as a water engineer at NIRAS. But as he approaches retirement, he is not stepping back, he is stepping out.

Through Engineers Without Borders, Niels has brought his expertise to communities in Tanzania and Ukraine, where access to clean water and basic infrastructure cannot be taken for granted.

In Tanzania, he helped explore solutions for a school struggling with unreliable water supply. In Ukraine, he contributed to securing clean water and solar energy for a summer camp for children affected by war.

For Niels, it is not about the scale of the project — but the impact it creates.
“Helping others gives purpose to what we do as engineers. We don’t just build infrastructure, we build hope.”

What stays with him most is the people: the gratitude, the strength, and the sense that even small improvements can change everyday life.

And perhaps that is what truly defines a career, not just what you build, but who you make a difference for.

Meet Kevin Joseph Ramirez, who entered this field of engineering by chance - and ultimately fell in love with it.

While road design may not have the same visible impact as the work of other engineers, Kevin deeply values the level of input and precision required to build infrastructure that looks simple but ensures the safety of millions. For this young engineer, the beauty of his field lies in the fact that it goes unnoticed, precisely because its effectiveness is cemented perfectly into everyday life.

Every year, several former colleagues find their way back at NIRAS. The reasons differ, but one thing is certain: we’re genuinely proud they chose to return.

“Experiencing the client side has given me deeper insight and made me a better consultant.”

After spending time on the client side at Aarhus Municipality, Martin has returned to NIRAS as Head of Department in Infrastructure.

“For me, it felt like coming home,” he says. “The culture, the flat structure, and the strong professional environment were still here and that’s rare to find.”

Sometimes the grass isn’t greener on the other side, but stepping away can give you a perspective that makes you stronger when you return.

Today, a new era begins at NIRAS 🔭

On 1 April 2026, we welcome Jens Brandt Bering in a new capacity as he officially takes office as CEO of NIRAS, marking a new chapter for the company.

Over the past months, Jens and former CEO Carsten Toft Boesen have travelled together across a large part of NIRAS – visiting colleagues in Denmark, the Netherlands, Poland, the UK, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and beyond. More than 25 sessions have been held, not as a formal roadshow, but as open and informal conversations.

The ambition has been clear: To meet as many colleagues as possible, to listen, to share perspectives, and to ensure a strong and well-anchored leadership transition. Because continuity is not only about structures – it is about people, culture, and shared understanding.

This approach reflects what defines NIRAS: Close collaboration, strong professional communities, and a commitment to staying connected across the organisation.

At the same time, the leadership transition marks the closing of an extraordinary chapter. After nearly 40 years with NIRAS – including 25 years as CEO – Carsten Toft Boesen now hands over the role, following decades of dedicated leadership and significant contributions to the development of the company.

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Carsten for his remarkable commitment, leadership, and lasting impact on NIRAS.

We now look forward to the journey ahead under Jens’s leadership – together with colleagues, clients, and partners 🤝
