Your structure could be part of the Struers Structure Calendar.

Our annual Structure Calendar highlights exceptional microstructures that reflect excellence in material preparation, analysis, and documentation — the best of the best from real lab work across metals and advanced materials.

And now we invite you to share your contribution - we would love to see your microstructure.

All submissions are reviewed, and a curated selection is chosen for the final A3 wall calendar used in labs globally.

If you want to participate, please share in the comments:
– A low res of your structure
– Material name
– Email so we can contact you for further information

While not all submissions are selected, every entry is carefully reviewed during our selection round. Selected contributors will be contacted to learn about their preparation method and the technical decisions behind the result.

Naturally, submissions must come from materials prepared using Struers equipment and consumables..

(Mg,Fe²⁺,Al)₃(Al,Si)₄O₁₀(OH)₂·4H₂O

That’s not just a formula—it’s the feature in Vermiculite.

This naturally occurring phyllosilicate mineral is best known for its remarkable ability to expand up to 30 times its volume when heated, a process called exfoliation. Lightweight, fire-resistant, and highly absorbent, vermiculite finds use across a wide range of industries—from thermal and acoustic insulation in construction, to soil conditioning in agriculture, and even packaging and industrial absorbents.

But preparing vermiculite for microscopic analysis is no easy task.

Its layered, porous structure and high water content make it sensitive to both mechanical and thermal stress during preparation. Achieving high-quality, undistorted sections requires:

Careful control of embedding and dehydration steps
Low-force grinding and polishing to prevent structural collapse
Often, the use of epoxy impregnation to preserve its internal porosity

At Struers, we’re constantly working with materials like vermiculite to refine and support preparation methods that deliver certainty—even with the most complex structures.

Winter’s own microstructure ❄️✨

From a distance it’s just a frozen window at sunrise – but up close, these branching icy cracks look like a polished and etched metal sample under the microscope. The same kind of patterns we chase in metallography are written here in nature by cold, light and time.

Sometimes all you need for inspiration is to look outside the lab.

What if higher quality and consistent repeatability weren’t goals but your daily standard?
