A small weld defect can become a long-term structural issue.
In industrial steel structures, imperfections such as lack of fusion, porosity, undercut, or cracking are not just cosmetic deviations — they can affect load distribution and fatigue resistance over time.

Proper weld defect repair requires more than just re-welding the affected area. It involves a controlled removal of the defect, verification of base material integrity, correct welding procedures, and often non-destructive testing to confirm compliance with the specification.

Repair quality directly influences structural integrity and long-term performance. In critical applications, there is no shortcuts.

The most expensive coating system will fail on a poorly prepared surface.
In industrial corrosion protection, surface preparation is the single most critical factor for coating performance. In practice, up to 80% of coating lifetime is determined before the first layer is applied.

Even the most advanced epoxy or polyurethane system cannot compensate for inadequate blasting or poor environmental control.

Achieving the correct cleanliness grade (e.g. Sa 2.5 according to ISO 8501-1), the specified anchor profile, and full removal of contaminants is essential for adhesion and durability. Surface profile and environmental conditions — including dust levels, steel temperature, and dew point margin — must be verified before application.

Performance is built long before the first coat goes on.

This 20-meter-long, 45-ton chimney section has completed Sa 2.5 blasting and initial coating inside and outside over a three-day process.

The component will now return to the customer for installation of the stainless liner. Then it will come back for final external coating combining the anti-corrosive strength of Hempadur Speed-Dry ZP 500 with the durable, weather-resistant finish of Hempathane FastDry 55750.

At our Velbæk paint shop, these newly produced chimneys completed a full 3-day surface treatment process:
• Hall 1: Abrasive blasting to Sa 2.5
• Hall 2: Application of a two-coat system —140 μm epoxy primer + 60 μm polyurethane topcoat
The result is a durable coating system with consistent finish and long-term corrosion protection.

Here’s a spreader beam feeder barge weighing 22.5 tons after blasting and initial surface treatment. The C5 High coating system, combined with precise edge and corner work, ensures long-term corrosion protection and durability.

This is just one of the many components already treated in our paint shop since the takeover — a strong start for Velbæk and our team. 💪
