The Foundation of FOSS

FOSS was founded in 1956 as N. His business plan was to automate otherwise time-consuming analytical methods by offering a fast and cost efficient method of analysis - a principle that still holds true today. The first instruments were developed to test moisture in grain. These were followed by analytical solutions for the dairy industry - a major business area for FOSS alongside a growing range of other application areas. In 1997, FOSS acquired Perstorp Analytical AB, which included Tecator AB and NIRSystems Inc. This added substantial strength in reference analysis methods and in grain, flour and feed.

FOSS A/S appoints new CEO

We are pleased to announce that Christian Rosenkrantz de Lasson (37) will become CEO of FOSS A/S, with formal appointment at our Annual General Meeting in March. Christian succeeds Kim Vejlby Hansen (61), who will continue advancing our photonics strategy and step into the role of CEO of our holding company, N. Foss & Co. A/S, alongside his various board responsibilities. To ensure the best possible transition, Kim will gradually reduce his operational role in FOSS A/S from the turn of the year.

“It is a pleasure to replace a capable and successful leader with another, once again recruited internally. The CEO transition has long been signaled by Kim and comes at a time when FOSS is performing strongly, and Christian has been well prepared to take over responsibility for FOSS. We are also pleased to strengthen N. Foss & Co., which, alongside FOSS, includes Au2mate, Ibsen Photonics, Wasatch Photonics, SPIO Systems, and Graspian,” says Peter Foss, Chair of the Board.

“I am proud to hand over a strong FOSS to Christian, who is the right person for the role. He has been part of FOSS’s leadership since 2022 and a key player in formulating FOSS’s strategy. This is the right time to transition, both for FOSS and for me,” says CEO Kim Vejlby Hansen.

Kim has been part of FOSS for 24 years, including 17 years in Group Management and 10 years as CEO. Before becoming CEO, he served as COO, Executive Vice President for Business & Product Development, and Vice President, R&D.

Christian joined FOSS in 2015 and most recently served as Senior Vice President, Marketing & Business Innovation, having previously led our EMEA service business. He holds an MSc in International Management and an EMBA.

Today marks a defining moment in FOSS history.

We have officially received the keys to our new facility in Vinge, Denmark – FOSS Production & Logistics!

Delivered on time, on budget, and true to the vision set almost four years ago, this milestone reflects the precision and reliability that define FOSS.

From the first drafts in 2021, our ambition was clear: to create a futureproof, build-for-purpose facility that serves customers worldwide while caring for people and the planet. We’re proud to say that ambition has become reality, and there are many dedicated and skilled people to thank, including our trusted partner, 5E.

The 18,000 m2 site is one of the largest investments in FOSS history and a bold statement about where we’re headed. Designed by the acclaimed architectural firm, Henning Larsen, the building combines technological excellence with human-centered design, natural materials, open volumes, and bright airy spaces that foster a spacious and inspiring work environment.

From 2027, the facility is expected to cover our global energy consumption with self-produced green electricity, powered by solar, geothermal, and wind energy.

This site will soon become the beating heart of FOSS’ global production and distribution. We’re truly excited.

Proudly announcing the winners of The Nils Foss Prize 2025! ⭐

The prizes honor cutting-edge research within the field of food and agriculture.

This year, the Nils Foss Excellence Prize (€100,000) was awarded to Professor Remko Boom from Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagenand Wageningen University & Research.

Professor Boom's pioneering research in food process engineering has led to significant breakthroughs in the development of mild and sustainable technologies for food production. Through multiscale analysis, he has deepened our understanding of food systems and enabled innovations like plant-based meat analogues and precision-fermented proteins. Not only have Boom's achievements advanced scientific knowledge – it has also demonstrated clear impact. In recent years, his group has fostered three successful start-up companies, translating research into practical solutions for the industry.

The Nils Foss Talent Prize (€15,000) went to Research Fellow, Dr. Natasha Logan from Queen's University Belfast

Dr. Logan's innovative research in nanomaterial and portable spectroscopy technology has led to important advances in the detection of chemical contaminants and food fraud. Her work focuses on portable, rapid SERS applications that address critical challenges in food safety and sustainability. She has demonstrated scientific excellence and entrepreneurial vision, with highly cited publications, a patent application, and successful engagement with the industry, paving the way for real-world solutions across the food supply chain.

How do we spark curiosity and inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators into a career?

Today we tried out best: Hosting yet another Science Day at FOSS Innovation Center with 50 high school students participating.

And it didn’t go unnoticed. Our scientists showed what happens if you mix carbide and water (a huge explosion!), and how it goes if you add boiling water to liquid nitrogen (huge clouds of steam!).

The day was full of experiments and hands-on learning on the ideas behind the innovation at FOSS. For seven decades, FOSS solutions have been pushing the boundaries of what possible technologically – all of this made possible because of knowledgeable people working together closely.

Throughout the day, the students explored the world of science and technology from building prototypes out of cardboard, programming microcomputers, and tackling real-world engineering challenges, to learning about project management and the journey into a career in (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) – there was something for every budding innovator.

During lunch, participants got up close with FOSS instruments and saw firsthand how we use analytical solutions to ensure food quality and support sustainable production worldwide.

A huge thank you to all the engaged students, teachers, and our dedicated FOSS team for making the day a success.
