🌍 Composite recycling technologies

🔍 Overview: Key Composite Recycling Technologies

1. Mechanical Recycling
👉Method: Shredding/grinding into smaller particles, then reused as filler in concrete, panels, or asphalt.
👉Pros: Low cost, scalable, relatively simple.
👉Cons: Material quality is degraded; limited to low-value applications.
👉Best for: Wind turbine blades, construction panels, low-grade reuse.

2. Thermal Recycling (Pyrolysis)
👉Method: High-temperature treatment in absence of oxygen to recover carbon or glass fibers.
👉Pros: Recovers valuable fibers with reasonable strength retention.
👉Cons: Energy-intensive; not ideal for glass fibers; emissions must be controlled.
👉Best for: Aerospace-grade carbon composites.

3. Chemical Recycling (Solvolysis)
👉Method: Use of solvents at controlled temperatures and pressure to dissolve the resin and free the fibers.
👉Pros: High-quality fiber recovery; potential for resin component reuse.
👉Cons: Expensive; complex; still in pilot stages.
👉Best for: High-end composites in aerospace and automotive.

4. Co-Processing in Cement Kilns
👉Method: Using composite waste as a fuel and material substitute in cement production.
👉Pros: Large-scale infrastructure exists; no ash left behind; reduces fossil fuel use.
👉Cons: No material recovery; not a true circular solution.
👉Best for: Fiberglass from wind blades and boats.

5. Reuse and Repurposing
👉Method: Mechanical cutting or modification to reuse large composite parts (e.g. in construction).
👉Pros: Low energy, low cost, keeps material in use.
👉Cons: Limited by design, logistics, and structural integrity.
👉Best for: Wind turbine blades, boat hulls.

🌍 How Wind is going Circular (Blade recycling)

Wind turbine blades are made up of composite materials that boost the performance of wind energy by allowing lighter and longer blades. Today 2.5 million tonnes of composite material are in use in the wind energy sector. ⚖️

The wind industry is committed to sustainable waste management 👌 in line with the multi-step approach put forward by the EU. In this approach waste prevention is regarded as the most favourable option followed by repurposing, recycling and disposal.

Wind turbines already have a recyclability rate of 85% to 90%. 👍 Most components of a wind turbine – the foundation, tower, components of the gear box and generator – are recyclable and are treated as such.

Wind turbine blades represent a specific challenge 🏗️ due to the complex nature of materials used to manufacture them. 15,000 wind turbine blades will be decommissioned in the next five years. Dealing with this significant volume requires logistical and technological solutions for the collection, transportation and waste management of the relevant material.

Just a small video about our Blade Cutter "on tour" 👏 and a test we did for some 62m long blade. do you want more information please give us a call.

Yesterday we also tested cutting through, district heating pipes and submarine cables with big succes 💪

The next step is to complete the first commercial Blade Cutter, which is scheduled to be ready after the summer holidays, as we have already been working on all the necessary updates since this test. 👍

Yesterday we successfully completed the load test of the Hub Lifting Yoke with a load of 262 tons at the Liftra test center in Nakskov. 👏

WLL- 170 Tons
Load test - 262 Tons
FEA - 340 Tons

No issues or deformations were observed during or after the test. 💪 This is a fantastic achievement, thanks to our dedicated employees, smart design, and solid calculations, all approved by DNV. 🎉 Also a big thanks to Veerendra Sigireddy to handle this project with a steady hand. 👏 and Jonas Thorgaard for keeping the calculation on the right track 👏

Advantis ApS first lifting tool in that size. We appreciate our customer’s trust in us to manage this project with confidence and professionalism. 👍

Also thanks our supplier Ålsrode Smede & Maskinfabrik A/S

Next step FAT test and then surface treatment before delivering to our customer
