♻️50 YEARS OF CIRCULAR COLLABORATION
– and still innovating!
Kalundborg Symbiosis has just reached a major milestone:
10 new resource streams in 10 years – the strategic goal set in 2016.
This matters far beyond the industry. The Symbiosis connects companies in Kalundborg through a world-leading circular model, where energy, water, and materials are shared across sectors to reduce waste and create value.
For students at University College Absalon’s Bachelor of Engineering in Biotechnology, it means studying in the heart of real-world green innovation.
You’re not just close to the labs and companies – you’re part of a unique ecosystem where sustainability, collaboration and science go hand in hand.
THE TEN NEW STREAMS INCLUDE:
💡Recovery of surplus heat from industrial wastewater for district heating.
💡Conversion of residual products into biogas and biomethane.
💡The world's first water treatment plant that treats surface water without chlorine.
💡Conversion from coal to biomass at the Asnæs power station.
💡Use of condensate from Ørsted in the refinery.
💡Data sharing for intelligent water and wastewater management.
💡Production of second-generation bioethanol from straw.
💡Facilities for capturing and storing CO₂
💡Establishment of Northern Europe's largest industrial cooling and heating plant.
💡Recycling of NMP.
