Where do you actually measure emissions from a landfill?

Many studies still rely on fixed measurement grids. The problem is that emissions from landfills are rarely evenly distributed. On the contrary, a large share often originates from relatively few hotspots.

If these hotspots are not identified, it is easy to underestimate the total emissions.

At DMR, we have therefore developed a rapid screening method that makes it possible to map methane concentrations across the entire landfill in high resolution. This screening provides a much better basis for:

🔹locating hotspots

🔹 targeting subsequent quantification (e.g., chambers or tracer gas)

🔹 reducing the need for very dense measurement grids

🔹 obtaining a more representative picture of the emissions.

The high resolution also makes it possible to perform very detailed screenings of, for example, biocover windows, where small variations in emissions can be decisive for whether the solution functions optimally.

New article in Scientific Reports on carbon dynamics in restored Norwegian peatlands

A new article in Scientific Reports documents the results from a controlled rewetting experiment in Norwegian peatlands:
“Carbon dynamics of a controlled peatland rewetting experiment in the Norwegian boreal zone.”

The study is based on five years of continuous monitoring of CO₂ and CH₄ fluxes from two drained peatlands near Trysil – before and after rewetting (restoration) – and provides important insights into the short-term effects of restoration.

Among the findings:

🔹 The groundwater table increased by approximately 9 cm after restoration

🔹 A short-term increase in both CO₂ and CH₄ emissions was observed

🔹 A new and promising method for counterfactual modelling of restoration effects was tested based on Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART)

🔹 The BART modelling estimates that the cumulative flux increased by 80.3 ± 49 g CO₂-C m⁻² and 3.4 ± 0.47 g CH₄-C m⁻² as a result of the restoration (two years after the intervention).

The study highlights how complex carbon processes in wetlands are – and how crucial long-term, field-based monitoring is for documenting the climate effects of restoration measures.

Restoration of wetlands and peatlands is an important climate mitigation measure – but the effects must be measured and documented robustly.

The study was funded by the Norwegian Environment Agency (Miljødirektoratet) and carried out by the University of Oslo, the University of Copenhagen, the Technical University of Denmark, and DMR Miljø og Geoteknikk AS.
