Our prediction for 2025?

That all producers in Europe of monopiles for offshore wind projects will start implementing automated and dust-free profiling and fatigue strength improvement of circumferential welds.

Why?

Well, apart from improving health and safety in the workplace, automated weld profiling is both faster and cheaper and the result is a uniform profile according to programme rather than being dependent on operator skill.

Enabling Europe and European producers of offshore wind foundations to set new standards - both in terms of work environment and productivity.

Offshore wind turbine foundations are produced by rolling sections of steel plate into cans and welding these cans together on top of each other to form monopiles and towers for supporting wind turbines at hight.

The foundations have a projected lifetime of 25+ years. In order to ensure structural integrity throughout and to maximise lifetime, weld profiling is recommended. By removing weld cap and weld toe using belt and disc grinders, the fatigue strength of the welds is significantly improved.

Manual weld profiling is a slow and laborious task. Rate is only about 1.5 - 3.0 meters per hour and thus the profiling of 500 meters of weld in one XXL monopile takes somewhere between 170 and 330 manhours. Dust particles from grinding are associated with serious and chronic lung problems and because of the size of the foundation structures, production takes place in very large facilities where dust may disperse and affect across a wide area.

Our MAX TM401 weld profiling robot will deliver dust-free fatigue strength improvement of welds using CNC-milling instead of grinding. The rate is 60+ meters per hour and the cost per meter is significantly below that of manual weld profiling.

Meeting European Wind Charter objectives require automation of production processes!

The EU's target of 300 GW of installed capacity by 2040 corresponds to 20,000 offshore wind turbines fitted with 15 MW turbines. The production of 20,000 monopiles requires about 30 million meters of circumferential weld seam - and many of those meters require geometric improvement to ensure fatigue strength.

Manual geometric improvement of a single circumferential weld seam in a monopile with a diameter of 10 meters takes 15-30 hours.

Our MAX TM401 CNC-robot system takes only 30 minutes - and the process is dust-free!

Soon we will be ready to deliver our TM401 system to monopile manufacturers in Europe who are industrialising and automating their production as much as they can to meet market demand.
