Let's talk about molecular sieves.
No really - I mean it.
Yes, you might think they look kind of boring, sitting there, doing nothing, resembling stones or grains of sand...
..but a lot of molecular biology (I mean, A LOT) depends upon molecular sieves.
Let me explain why.
Moisture is poison when you are chemically synthesizing oligonucleotides - and oligos are at the core of so much molecular biolody.
Reagents for oligo synthesis need to be moisture-free, otherwise all kinds of bad stuff can happen - reduced reaction efficiency, unwanted side reactions, premature activation of reactive side groups on phosphoramidites.
In short, if you want purer, high-quality oligonucleotides, you need to maintain low moisture content during their chemical synthesis.
This is where molecular sieves come in.
However... molecular sieves are a bit of a pain to work with. They need to be cared for, prepared, stored correctly. You need to pre-condition and activate them before use (this involves baking them at high temperature).
If you need dry solvents, you need molecular sieves, but do you want to spend your time "baking sand" when you could be "making DNA?"
Of course not - and this is where EZ Dry moisture traps come in.
EZ Dry's consist of sachets of dry, pre-conditioned molecular sieves. You receive them, vacuum-packed, ready to use. Just open the pack, drop them in your solvent, where they will adsorb moisture, allowing you to make oligos. They come in different pack sizes, depending on solvent volume, covering most working volumes found in oligo synthesis labs.
