A celebration post and virtual 🎂 are the least important parts of us turning 4.

What counts are the reflections and learnings we take on our previous year as well as the adjustments we will apply to improve the progress on our mission.

This year is all about:
🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️Growing our internal team of volunteers and interns
💻🔍Redesigning and refining our platform via usability testing
🥼📊Establishing procedures, content, and internal communities for our first Quests

Our goal by our next birthday is to be ready for a public relaunch of http://humanitrack.org with easy to perform digital volunteering actions to keep the Quest databases and roadmaps updated and their student and researcher communities empowered, aligned, and inspired.

Thank you to all of our volunteers, interns, and community supporters for sticking with us for the first 4 years and let’s keep humanity’s tech on track to a better future! 💚

The world’s first mass vaccination program against malaria, announced this week, is set to prevent millions of children from catching malaria and thousands dying from this debilitating disease.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended widespread use of the RTS,S/AS01 (Mosquirix) vaccine in young children who are most at risk of malaria in Africa.
A study, published in the journal PLOS Medicine, estimated that if the vaccine rolled out to countries with the most malaria cases, it could prevent 5.4 million cases and 23,000 deaths in children under 5 every year.

A new cancer treatment can wipe out tumours in terminally ill head and neck cancer patients, scientists have discovered.⚕️
In a landmark trial, a cocktail of immunotherapy medications harnessed patients’ immune systems to kill their own cancer cells and prompted “a positive trend in survival”, according to researchers at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), London, and the Royal Marsden NHS foundation trust.
Scientists found the combination of nivolumab and ipilimumab medications led to a reduction in the size of tumours in terminally ill head and neck cancer patients. In some, their cancer disappeared altogether, with doctors stunned to find no detectable sign of disease.
Not only does the combination of drugs cause tumours to vanish in some terminally ill patients, the immunotherapy treatment triggered far fewer side-effects than chemotherapy.

You might recognize Dr. Mayim Bialik from her role in The Big Bang Theory as Amy. What less people know is that Bialik is a fully qualified neuroscientist, with a doctorate similar to Amy's in the show!

Her love for science resonates with all of us here at and reminds us about the wonders of working in 💚

We are starting the week with some amazing news!🥳
👁️Seven patients with a rare eye disease volunteered to let doctors modify their DNA by injecting the revolutionary gene-editing tool CRISPR directly into cells that are still in their bodies.
This is the first time researchers worked with CRISPR this way. Earlier experiments had removed cells from patients' bodies, edited them in the lab and then infused the modified cells back into the patients.🧬
On Wednesday, researchers revealed the first evidence that the approach appears to be working — improving vision for at least some patients with the condition, known as Leber congenital amaurosis, or LCA, a severe form of vision impairment.
Pennesi cautioned that more patients need to be treated and followed longer to confirm the approach is safe and to determine just how much it can help patients. But the current results are so promising that the researchers have gotten the go-ahead to move on to the next group of patients.

Pfizer has started testing its potential COVID-19 treatment as a preventive medicine aimed at warding off the virus if a close contact gets it.💊
Pfizer said it is launching a mid-to-late-stage clinical trial to test whether the antiviral drug, PF-07321332, can prevent Covid-19 infection in some 2,660 healthy adults living in the same house as someone with a confirmed symptomatic infection.
The trial will test the safety and efficacy of the pill with ritonavir, another antiviral widely used to treat HIV. One third of patients in the trial will receive a placebo, while the remainder will receive a dose of the drug twice a day for either five or 10 days.

September has been a big month for neurology!🧠
In a new study from Curtin University, researchers discovered a likely cause of Alzheimer’s disease.
They identified that a probable cause of Alzheimer’s disease was the leakage from the blood into the brain of fat-carrying particles transporting toxic proteins. The researchers say they have identified the probable ‘blood-to-brain pathway’ that can lead to Alzheimer’s disease, the most prevalent form of dementia globally.
