Architectural vision should never compromise structural performance.
This residence features an open concept rear layout, resulting in a lower density of structural walls and a nonuniform distribution of lateral stiffness. Without proper engineering, this configuration can increase torsional demands during an earthquake.
Although the primary structural system consists of reinforced and confined concrete masonry (CMU) walls, strategically located reinforced concrete shear walls were incorporated at the rear of the residence to increase lateral stiffness, improve stiffness distribution, and mitigate torsional effects, resulting in a more balanced seismic response.
Recent seismic events in Venezuela remind us that seismic design is far more than code compliance. Understanding stiffness distribution, torsional behavior, and structural regularity is essential to achieving resilient buildings.
Seismic hazard is beyond our control. Seismic vulnerability is not. Through sound engineering and thoughtful structural design, we can significantly improve a building’s performance and protect lives when the ground begins to shake.
