What are self-motivation and initiative?

"The ability to do what needs to be done without being prompted by others or the willingness to take a fresh approach"

These attributes are probably some of the most important determinants of success in any situation. Self-motivation is about your internal drive to achieve, develop and keep moving forward; it is what pushes you on to complete something when you feel like giving up. Linked to this is initiative: This is about being proactive rather than reactive, spotting and taking advantage of opportunities as they arise and persisting in the face of setbacks.
Why do employers want them?

It makes their job easier! Once a self-motivated person is familiar with the organisation or team objectives, they will get on and do what is required of them - and more - in order to meet and exceed those objectives. They are also more likely to be on the look out for, identify and take advantage of opportunities as they arise. This can have many benefits for the employing organisation such as new business opportunities or improved systems or processes.
Examples of how self-motivation and initiative can be developed or evidenced

Self-motivation

Will be different for everyone so you need to identify what motivates you in order to provide examples during the application process, but in general, examples of when you have done something over and above the norm, or out of the ordinary, can be good to use.

Initiative

Suggesting changes to a course representative.
Getting relevant work experience or sponsorship.
Starting a new student group, society or activity.
Coping well in a sudden crisis.
Working independently during a work placement or job to fulfil objectives.

What are planning and organisational skills?

The ability to identify and set objectives, manage and prioritise your workload and other resources. Monitor performance against objectives, anticipating and putting steps in place to mitigate potential issues/ problems.

Why employers want them

In a word, efficiency! Having employees who are well organised and able to plan and manage their own time and resources, as well as other resources, reduces the need for micro-managing. It helps in providing customers or clients with realistic time-frames, delivering on projects as promised and ensuring that work is carried out as efficiently as possible and that all relevant people are involved.

Examples of how planning and organisational skills can be developed or evidenced

-Managing and prioritising your personal workload (time-management).
-Organising social, sporting or charity events.
-Arranging travel itineraries.
-Organising work experience or placements.
-Event management experience (e.g. customer liaison, co-ordination of bookings, organising equipment, planning advertising and working to deadlines).

What are IT skills and digital literacy?
IT Skills

The ability to use computers and software for tasks like word processing, presenting, research, retrieval and storage of information and for communicating.

The above definition refers to the basic IT skills which most employers would expect graduates to be competent with. In certain roles or sectors, they will require more advanced abilities and knowledge.

Digital literacy

Is a more recent concept, and one which incorporates generic IT skills, but is more wide-ranging. It is something which will become increasingly important the more we rely on technology.

The ability to locate, organise, understand, evaluate and analyse information using digital technology. It involves a working knowledge of current high-technology, and an understanding of how it can be used.
Wikipedia

Digital literacy - and IT skills - are not static skills or abilities, but require updating and ongoing learning to stay abreast of new technologies and developments.
Why do employers value IT skills and digital literacy?

Technology is ubiquitous in all areas of life, including the workplace. Used correctly it can improve efficiency and exchange of information, enable businesses to reach wider audiences or customers or manage internal systems and processes more effectively. Therefore potential employees being familiar with standard software and technology, as well as being comfortable in adapting to new ones quickly, is essential for the majority of employers.

What are adaptability and flexibility skills?
Adaptability
"The ability to change (or be changed) to fit changed circumstances."

Flexibility
"Capacity to be bent, usually without breaking"

These are two very similar concepts and are often used interchangeably, or together in job descriptions. In an employment context, it could include how responsive you are to new information, changing conditions or circumstances, commitment to making ongoing improvements in systems, processes or ways of working and how well you handle or make use of uncertain situations.

Why do employers want them?

The ability to cope with change, or respond well to change, is extremely important in the workplace. Situations, circumstances or workplaces can change extremely quickly, and if individuals, and therefore organisations, cannot adapt to changes quickly, they are likely to be left behind.
Examples of how adaptability and flexibility can be developed or evidenced

Working part-time whilst studying, perhaps taking on last-minute shifts.
Year abroad or independent travel abroad.
Taking on different roles and responsibilities.
Combining study with personal commitments.
Moving from home to university.
Becoming an integral part of a company on work experience or in a job (e.g. fitting in with the team and forming working relationships, accommodating a different set of expectations, following expected conventions, suggesting and implementing improvements).

What is the ability to work under pressure?

This relates to how you respond when put under pressure. In a work context, pressure can be defined as;

The stress or urgency of matters requiring attention, the burden of physical or mental distress and the constraint of circumstances.

The ability to work under pressure involves dealing with constraints which are often outside of your control - these might be resource or time constraints, the difficulty of the task or having insufficient knowledge required to complete the task, or unforeseen changes or problems. Effective planning and time-management (to mitigate or allow for unexpected problems for example) can reduce the likelihood of some pressurised situations occurring, but will not eradicate them completely.
Why do employers value the ability to work under pressure?

Changes and unexpected events, problems or challenges can - and do - often occur, regardless of how well-planned or organised you are. The ability to respond effectively to pressure and stress is therefore extremely important in any line of work. How you respond will vary from person to person; some people thrive on it and perform better when under pressure, others may panic or become ineffective. It is important that you are aware of how you act in such situations and what steps you can take to improve your effectiveness in such situations if necessary.
Examples of how the ability to work under pressure can be developed or evidenced

Dealing with an emergency.
Overcoming problems or issues to achieve a goal, e.g. losing assignment data or work.
Reorganising responsibilities in a group task if one member unexpectedly drops out.
Managing well when work is unexpectedly busy or short staffed.
