📜 Nueva Crónica y Buen Gobierno por Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala

🔎 La investigación histórica de la minería en el Ecuador por Maximina Navarro Cárdenas fue publicada en dos ediciones (1986 / 1990) 📚 y compila múltiples documentos desde el siglo XVI al XX 🏛️ con el propósito de sentar la primera base para escribir su historia.

✍️ Se basa principalmente en las obras de los primeros cronistas como Cieza y Garcilaso, los informes de funcionarios coloniales como Salinas Loyola, Jorge Juan y Antonio de Ulloa, las observaciones de exploradores y científicos como Humboldt y Wolf, así como las investigaciones de historiadores nacionales como Velasco y González Suárez 🇪🇨, además de una gran cantidad de documentos oficiales enviados a España durante la época colonial.

🗺️ The third geological map of Ecuador, published in 1969, was originally compiled to establish a geological base for the Mineralogical and Metallogenic Map of the Republic of Ecuador ⛏️. Most of the material used for the compilation was obtained from the archives of the National Geology and Mining Service 🔎.

⚠️ The main difficulty is the confusion regarding geological terminology ❓. Various stratigraphic terms are used by private companies 🏢, and no committee or institution has yet been formed to determine stratigraphic correlations and classify new names and new information 🤝.

📜 The use of the word Formation in the legend does not always indicate that it has met all the requirements of recognized international classification 🌍. Many years of systematic mapping and research 🔬 are necessary before the stratigraphy of Ecuador can be adequately classified 🪨.

This work is based on explorations by mining and oil companies ⛏️🛢️ along with the research Walther Sauer conducted between 1935 and 1956 as a professor at the Universidad Central and the Escuela Politécnica Nacional 🎓. His academic and research career in the country began after a direct invitation from President Velasco Ibarra in 1935 to promote geological studies for the benefit of Ecuador.

Although the book represents a key milestone for national geology 📖, the author acknowledges that his conclusions are partially provisional 🧩. Due to a lack of time, resources, and the inaccessibility of several regions, many tectonic and stratigraphic problems could not be detailed completely and had to be addressed through geological deductions and hypotheses 🧭.

Geological mapping in Ecuador began with the pioneering work of Teodoro Wolf in 1892 🧭. Although Wolf’s primary contribution focused on his geographical map, his exhaustive petrographic 🪨, mineralogical 💎, and geomorphological 🏔️ observations served as the fundamental pillar of the country's geological knowledge for over three decades 📜.

The map produced by Walther Sauer in 1957 represented a substantial update to that legacy 🔍, integrating the most recent data of the era from international oil companies 🛢️ with his own field research conducted between 1935 and 1950 during his teaching career at the Universidad Central and the Escuela Politécnica Nacional.

📚 This wide-ranging and highly relevant project focuses on the question of space and explores the most diverse aspects of Ecuadorian reality 🇪🇨. Both comprehensive and concise, this work is intended to meet a need for knowledge and action for all Ecuadorians. Its objective is to explicitly study everything in the country that bears witness to a fundamental relationship: that between people and their physical and social environment. 👥🏔️

📖 The first Stratigraphic Lexicon of Ecuador (1956)

👴🏼 Robert Hoffstetter (1908-1999) was a French taxonomist and paleontologist 🇫🇷 and one of the leading specialists in South American fossil mammal fauna. He lived in Ecuador 🇪🇨 for several years (1946 to 1953) and carried out numerous field missions in Peru 🇵🇪 and Bolivia 🇧🇴.

🇲🇽 At the International Geological Congress in Mexico in 1956, the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), together with the Commission on Stratigraphy, promoted the International Stratigraphic Lexicon 📚🌍, a collective project that organized global stratigraphic terminology. As part of this initiative, Hoffstetter published the Stratigraphic Lexicon of Ecuador 📖🇪🇨.

In the case of Ecuador, the stratigraphic terminology remained problematic due to a high prevalence of synonyms and homonyms 🔄, as well as terms lacking proper definitions or containing contradictory ones. Due to the lack of a detailed geological study of the country, Hoffstetter did not seek to correct these flaws, but rather to compile the available sources as completely as possible 🗂️, highlighting their contradictions to serve as a foundation for future revision work 🔍.

🗺️ A journey through Ecuador's geological and exploratory history.

In the first quarter of the 20th century, a group of geologists and researchers was hired under the concession of the Leonard Exploration Company of New York to explore a vast area of 9,600 square miles east of the Ecuadorian Andes. The main objective? To evaluate and determine the potential for future oil production in Ecuador's Amazon region.

This work gathers a series of fundamental studies conducted between 1923 and 1932, covering everything from the geology of the Oriente (Amazon region) to the Ecuadorian Coast and Highlands:
