Many AI projects fail even when the technology works.

The reason is usually not algorithms, but unclear decisions, unclear ownership, and unresolved constraints.

AI doesn’t fix this.
It makes the gaps more visible.

AI initiatives in manufacturing rarely fail because of algorithms. They fail because the systems they are added to are unclear.

We published Part 1 of a short series on AI in manufacturing.

Today, “AI” is used to describe almost anything that gives a recommendation — forecasts, reorder points, maintenance alerts, supplier rankings. Most of these systems are useful, but calling them intelligence is misleading.

When rule-based automation is sold as AI, expectations move away from how these systems really work. Decisions are then made on promises the technology was never built to keep.

This has little to do with innovation.
It reflects a lack of rigor in language, system design, and responsibility.
