Today, we celebrate 25 years of collaboration with Margus Niinepuu, who leads our R&D and has helped make Windak what it is today.

As the “father” of almost all our core products, Margus has shaped the mechanical design of the machines our customers rely on every day.

Among his creations is the SpoolWinder SW6, the world’s fastest cable spooler and still one of our most popular products among US customers. 🚀

His recent work on the AutoLoader AL60 is already earning praise from customers for making reel handling easier and less physically demanding for operators.

A second life for cable reels. A whole lot of REEL fun! 🌱😊

At Windak, we usually see cable reels on the production floor. At Kotka Kindergarten, they’re becoming tables, little stages and café tables where chocolate soup is on the menu! 🍫

We were happy to give these reels a new home in the kindergarten’s outdoor play area. The children’s imagination takes care of the rest, giving them a new role every day.

Sometimes, a simple cable reel is all it takes to get creativity rolling. 💛

When a take-up reel becomes full, production needs to switch quickly to the next reel while the extrusion or jacketing line continues running.

Why does this matter?

Extruder output does not always change linearly with screw speed. If line speed has to be reduced during a reel change, extrusion output and line speed may fall out of optimal synchronization.

This can lead to variations in insulation or sheath thickness and, in critical applications, contribute to quality deviations, spark faults and scrap.

And when copper prices are high, every avoidable meter of scrap becomes more expensive — making process stability and consistent cable quality even more critical.

For high-value or multi-core cables, even a short production disturbance can become costly.

This is why a reel change is more than a material-handling operation, it is part of the inline production process.

Is reel handling keeping up with your extrusion line❓

In an inline extrusion process, every reel change matters.

With a conventional process, each changeover may require coordination between operators, forklifts and production — all within the same working area.
How reels are prepared, delivered to the line, changed and removed can have a major impact on cable quality and overall production flow.
