After Posidonia, our CEO Hannes Lilp and CTO Stefano Pitton visited the facility where our marine heat pump systems are manufactured, together with our partner LUCIA FAVARETTO.

The marine heat pump is a good example of what can be achieved when partners bring together different areas of expertise. Working closely together allows us to challenge assumptions, align technology with operational realities, and ultimately develop solutions that respond to real market needs.

And yes, seeing things in person still beats another video call any day. Until next time, Lucia and Italy!

A few days at Posidonia can easily turn into dozens of conversations.

Some are planned months in advance. Others happen while walking between halls, grabbing a coffee or being introduced by a mutual connection. Our CEO Hannes Lilp also had the opportunity to sit down with Container News for a discussion on developments across the maritime sector.

There is often an expectation that shipping will eventually converge around a single alternative fuel.

In practice, the future is likely to be far more diverse. Vessel types, operating regions, infrastructure availability and commercial realities all point towards multiple fuel pathways rather than one universal solution.

At the Net Zero Maritime Conference 2026, our Innovation Manager Alex Vainokivi joined a panel discussion on the role of alternative fuel suppliers in maritime decarbonisation.

From a retrofit perspective, the challenge is particularly significant. More than 50,000 commercial vessels are already in operation today, many of which will still be sailing in 2040. While newbuilds remain important, a substantial part of shipping's decarbonisation journey will depend on upgrading and adapting the existing fleet.
The technology is advancing rapidly. The bigger question is whether regulations, fuel availability and economics can provide shipowners with the confidence needed to make long-term investment decisions.

SplashTech has covered SRC’s new partnership with Energy Transfer, bringing high-efficiency electric heat pump technology to the maritime sector.

The solution is designed for vessels that currently rely on conventional oil-fired boilers and chillers for onboard heating and cooling. By combining SRC’s ship engineering and retrofit experience with Energy Transfer’s thermal management expertise, the aim is to support both newbuild and retrofit projects with a system that can be integrated into existing vessel infrastructure.

For shipowners, the value is straightforward:
lower fuel consumption, reduced operating costs, and a practical route to lower emissions-related expenses.

One of the most interesting parts of our work is meeting people from very different fields and seeing how innovation is approached beyond our own industry.

Last week, we welcomed a team from ENEFIT, who have developed a microdegree programme in cooperation with the University of Tartu. One of the subjects in the programme is synergistic innovation, and as part of broadening their perspective, they wanted to take a closer look at another organisation’s innovation management journey.

SRC Group CEO Hannes Lilp and Innovation Manager Alex Vainokivi shared how SRC approaches innovation strategy across the organisation, and how we develop products that respond to real customer needs and create a meaningful impact in the maritime sector.

SRC Group has partnered with Energy Transfer to deliver fully electric marine heat pump solutions for both retrofit and newbuild projects.

The partnership combines Energy Transfer’s thermal management technology with SRC Group’s maritime engineering and retrofit expertise to deliver solutions designed around real vessel operating conditions, onboard interfaces, and space limitations.

Under favourable operating conditions, the system can deliver up to 11 kW of combined thermal output from 1 kW of electrical input through simultaneous heating and cooling onboard.

The compact modular systems are custom-built for each vessel and can replace conventional oil-fired boilers and conventional chillers with a fully electric solution covering HVAC, hot water, and sanitary systems.

The skid-mounted design makes integration easier for both retrofit and newbuild applications where machinery space is always a consideration.

For shipowners, this means substantially lower energy consumption, lower operating costs, and reduced emissions-related costs, with typical payback periods under two years.

One thing that continues to stand out in the maritime industry is that even in a highly competitive environment, there is still a strong willingness to exchange experiences, challenge ideas openly and work together when it comes to solving bigger industry challenges.

Good discussions at the Enterprise Estonia maritime markets event last week, where SRC CEO Hannes Lilp was part of the panel discussion on opportunities and networking across the Finnish, German and Danish maritime markets.
