🔌 5 Common Mistakes When Selecting MCBs (And How to Avoid Them) 🔌

Choosing the wrong Miniature Circuit Breaker can lead to nuisance tripping, equipment damage, or even electrical fires. Don't let a small oversight cause big problems!

Here are the top 5 mistakes we see in the industry:

❌ Mistake #1: Ignoring the Breaking Capacity

Grabbing any MCB without checking the prospective short-circuit current at the installation point.
✅ Solution: Always calculate the PSCC and select an MCB with a higher breaking capacity (e.g., 6kA, 10kA).

❌ Mistake #2: Confusing B, C, and D Curves

Using a Type C breaker for sensitive electronic equipment or a Type B for high-inrush motors.
✅ Solution: Match the curve to the load. Type B for residential/light commercial, Type C for general industrial, Type D for transformers/motors.

❌ Mistake #3: Wrong Polarity

Using a 1P MCB where a 1P+N or 2P is required by code, especially for safety isolation.
✅ Solution: Check local regulations. Ensure the neutral is switched if required for the application.

❌ Mistake #4: Overlooking Temperature Derating

Installing an MCB rated for 30°C in a hot panel room reaching 50°C without adjusting for heat.
✅ Solution: Check the manufacturer's temperature derating chart and upsize accordingly.

❌ Mistake #5: Matching Cable to MCB Incorrectly
Installing a 20A MCB on a 1.5mm² cable, risking the cable melting before the breaker trips.

✅ Solution: The MCB must protect the cable. Ensure the cable's current-carrying capacity is equal to or greater than the MCB rating.

Get it right the first time. Safety first! 💡
