When oil enters wastewater, it tends to float and form a surface layer, which blocks oxygen transfer and harms microorganisms responsible for biological degradation. This leads to poor treatment efficiency and operational problems. Therefore, pretreatment units such as oil & grease traps, oil separators, and Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) are used to remove oil early. In DAF systems, air bubbles attach to oil droplets, causing them to float to the surface where they can be skimmed off, protecting downstream biological processes and improving overall treatment performance.
