Plastic pollution is accumulating worldwide, on land and in the oceans.
▪️ According to one widely cited estimate, by 2025, 100 million to 250 million metric tons of plastic waste could enter the ocean each year.
▪️ Another study commissioned by the World Economic Forum projects that without changes to current practices, there may be more plastic by weight than fish in the ocean by 2050.
▪️ On March 2, 2022, representatives from 175 nations around the world took a historic step toward ending that pollution.
▪️ The United Nations Environment Assembly voted to task a committee for forging a legally binding global treaty on plastic pollution by 2024. U.N.
▪️ Environment Program Executive Director Inger Andersen described it as “an insurance policy for this generation and future ones, so they may live with plastic and not be doomed by it.”

We are committed to reducing our waste through our continued focus on improving operational eco-efficiencies and higher resource utilization.
- We ensure that strong compliance standards are in place to manage the waste at our sites according to regulatory requirements.
- This includes proper waste inventory by name, type, code (as required by law), storage location, method of offsite transportation, treatment and disposal, the quantity of waste generated, and waste stored onsite and disposed of both onsite and offsite.
- We also ensure that our waste is disposed through sustainable and qualified vendors who reuse, recover or recycle.
- We manage our waste responsibly, strive to exceed regulatory requirements, and record the quantity of waste generated, stored onsite, and disposed of onsite and offsite.
- In addition, we carry out site audits of key vendors to ensure that their waste management standards are in-line with approved local regulations in addition to our sustainable practices.
- We continually implement new and innovative waste reduction, recycling, and recovery initiatives to reduce our waste intensity, especially hazardous waste. For instance, in 2020, the total amount of reused, recycled, and recovered waste reached 70% of total waste.

In 2011, with the acquisition of Wellman International, IVL began recycling PET bottles, producing clean PET flake to be used in fiber, sheet, and bottle applications ♻️.
- Since then, IVL has added PET bottle recycling capacity in Mexico, USA, and Thailand.
- We were also one of the pioneers in the PET resin business to add recycled PET flake into our virgin polymerization process allowing us to efficiently create PET resin with up to 30% recycled content.

Given the limitations on the planet’s natural resources, we are shifting from conventional to renewable energy sources, which offers enormous possibilities in reducing our carbon footprint while helping to protect the environment.
- We are continuously exploring opportunities to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy across our business operations.

- In order to decarbonize our carbon footprint in our operations and value chain, we are exploring a diverse portfolio of solutions. We are actively reducing our reliance on conventional energy and increasing our use of renewable energy sources.

- Decarbonizing IVL’s energy consumption via onsite and offsite renewable energy development is one of our Decarbonization strategies.

- We are consuming renewable energy (biogas, biomass, and renewable electricity) in our operations and are further exploring the option of increasing the use of renewable electricity to achieve our 2025 ambitions.

In 2018, the company became actively engaged, with the EU government’s effort to reduce plastic waste as part of the Single-Use Plastic Directive, and in addition, engaged with several NGOs to help promote the Circular Economy. An example of an NGO we are working with early on is the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
- IVL is involved in the Ellen MacArthur “New Plastics Economy Global Commitment” in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Program towards a vision of a circular economy for sustainable plastics.

- PET will continue in its tradition at the forefront of the recycling of plastic waste, bearing the standard for circular processing business models.
- Over the past two years, Indorama Ventures has also undertaken two chemical recycling initiatives with selected partners.
- Chemical recycling allows for the recycling of lower-quality, hard to recycle, post-consumer PET to virgin-grade resin.
- Through collaboration in Europe, in 2019 it is envisaged that IVL will take reclaimed monomers generated from the company IONIQA, to combine with traditional feedstock to make virgin-grade PET with recycle content.
- This will exhibit the circularity of PET by generating new from post-consumer waste.
- A joint venture with Loop Industries will also break down PET polymer from post-consumer waste and make a new 100% virgin-grade rPET.
