We are pleased to announce a new publication resulting from our research project!

Aneta Skalec’s article, “The 1909–1910 Gebelein Manuscript Inventory (Inventario Manoscritto): Archival Data from the M.A.I. Excavations”, has just been published in the Journal of Open Archaeology Data.

The paper presents a digital edition of an important archival document recording 1906 artefacts transferred to the Museo Egizio in Turin following the 1909–1910 excavations at Gebelein conducted by the Missione Archeologica Italiana under Ernesto Schiaparelli.

By bringing together the original manuscript inventory, its transcription and English translation, and information on the present state of the collection, the study provides a valuable new resource for reconstructing the archaeological contexts of objects from Gebelein and for investigating the history of archaeological research and museum collections.

Dr Wojciech Ejsmond and Dr Aneta Skalec had the pleasure of presenting their talk “In the Shadow of Thebes: Gebelein and the Lives of Ordinary Egyptians” at Tebes Hotel in Luxor yesterday.

Nestled between Thebes and Aswan, the Gebelein micro-region preserves one of the most continuous archaeological records in Egypt—from Palaeolithic camps to Medieval mausolea. Yet, for decades, this extraordinary place has remained in the shadow of Egypt’s more famous centres. Early Egyptology, focused on monumental temples and elite tombs, largely overlooked Gebelein’s quieter but equally revealing story: the daily lives of ordinary people, local religious practices, and traces of ethnic diversity in a provincial landscape. Today, as research turns toward these more human dimensions of the past, Gebelein stands out as a vital key to understanding how ancient Egyptians beyond the royal courts and temple walls lived, worshipped, and identified themselves. The talk presented the history of the area and some of the results of the current research project, like the town of Pathyris and the local temple of Hathor.

It was great to see so many friends and members of archaeological missions working in Thebes! Thank you all for coming! And thank you Thebes Hotel for hosting the lecture!

Archaeological fieldwork through the lens of a skilled photographer, Olek Leydo

Sweat, exhaustion, and excitement are all captured in Olek's photographs, which document our every move.

It’s hot—sometimes 38°C, with no wind—and the soil is everywhere in the air. You can see sweat drops on the ground, and our noses are filled with dust, but our hearts are full of excitement! From time to time, we take a break for tea. We can’t express enough gratitude for the hard work and dedication of our workers. Together, we can do anything!

We are deeply grateful to the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities for granting us the privilege to carry out this research and for their kind support. Our sincere thanks also go to the inspectorates of Luxor and Esna and their managers, whose assistance ensured that procedures ran smoothly and allowed us to begin without delay. Last but not least, the inspectors and guards of Gebelein who care for the relics of the past in the area.
