๐ฅ SLB: The Company That Taught the Oilfield How to See Underground
Long before real-time drilling data, AI, digital twins, and advanced formation evaluation, there was a much simpler question:
How do you know what is happening thousands of feet beneath your feet?
In 1926, two brothers, Conrad and Marcel Schlumberger, founded the company that would become one of the most influential technology companies in the history of the oilfield.
Their breakthrough came in 1927.
At the Pechelbronn field in Alsace, France, a team led by physicist Henri-Georges Doll lowered an electrical sonde into a 500-meter-deep well and recorded what became the world's first electrical resistivity well log.
It was a simple graph.
But the idea was revolutionary.
For the first time, engineers could use electrical measurements from inside a well to understand the formations around it and identify differences that could reveal potential hydrocarbon-bearing zones.
The oilfield had started to see underground.
And that was only the beginning.
By the 1930s, Schlumberger had introduced continuous-recording logging and the spontaneous potential log. Its technology spread across major oil-producing regions, and the company continued developing new ways to measure, characterize, and understand the subsurface.

A century later, the technology has changed dramatically.
