Pump Priming is the process of removing air from the pump and suction line. Centrifugal Pumps are designed to pump liquids not gases. Centrifugal Pump cannot suck the liquid, but it pushes the liquid from suction to discharge.
What is the control system's approach to priming centrifugal pumps?
The principal idea is to adhere to the following steps:
- Make sure that all necessary protections are in place and active.
- Preparing the system so that air can be drawn from the pump's suction line.
- Start the centrifugal pump and then exit the priming system.
In detail, the control system will execute the steps.
1- Check for protection such as dry running.
2- Close the discharge valve.
3- Open solenoid
4- Start operating the priming pump.
5- Check the current state of the flow switch.
6- Wait some time until the flow switch is stable.
7- Start operating the centrifugal pump.
8- Stop operating the priming pump.
9- Close solenoid
10- Open the discharge valve.
The control system can perform a preliminary test by comparing the water level in the tank to the level of the pump. If the water level is below the pump's center, the entire priming process must be carried out.
However, if the water level is higher than the pump level, in this case it is possible to operate without the preparation process, which leads to saving energy consumption and preserving the life of the preparation system.
In general, a control system (SCADA, DCS, PLC, Classic control, and measuring devices) is necessary for operating the pump station automatically and performing the priming process.
