🔬 What if your first step towards becoming a scientist started in a real research lab at the age of 16?

This year, more than 150 talented secondary school students experienced science first-hand across the through the talent programmes of Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera Ciència

From spending Saturdays in BIST Community centres' laboratories with Bojos per la Ciència to developing research projects through Joves i Ciència and the Barcelona International Youth Science Challenge (BIYSC), these programmes help young people discover what a career in research is really like.

Because today's curious students are tomorrow's scientists. 💙

💡 The centre IBEC | Bioenginyeria leads a consortium that has developed a new class of light-activated drugs capable of restoring key visual functions in animal models of blindness caused by retinal degenerative diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa.

The new compounds, called prosthe6, act as a "molecular prosthesis" by replacing the function of lost photoreceptors and reactivating the retina's natural circuitry. Among their most promising features:
👉 No genetic manipulation or implanted devices are required.
👉 They work under normal ambient light conditions.
👉 They restored natural visually guided behaviors in blind mice, including after administration as eye drops.

While these compounds do not cure blindness and further research is needed before clinical use, this work represents an important milestone toward more accessible, reversible, and potentially widely applicable treatments for retinal degeneration.

The consortium also includes: Universidad de Alcalá IQAC CSIC Universitat de Barcelona UAB FES - Fundació Eduard Soler

🎓✨ From day one... to graduation.

Just a few months ago, we welcomed the ninth cohort of the Master of Multidisciplinary Research in Experimental Sciences ( ). Today, we celebrate the successful completion of an intensive year of learning and research by 24 students from eight nationalities and a wide range of scientific backgrounds.

Throughout the programme, they carried out research projects in laboratories across the and MELIS UPF culminating in the public defence of their Master's theses and their graduation.

These photos capture the beginning and the end of a remarkable journey—one that we hope is only the first step in many exciting scientific careers.

Congratulations to the MMRES Class of 2025–2026! We can't wait to see where your scientific journeys take you next. 👏🔬

An international team of scientists from the Consortium, including Roderic Guigó and Ramil Nurtdinov from the centre Centre de Regulació Genòmica (CRG), has created one of the most comprehensive maps yet of the DNA elements that regulate human genes.

Published in , the work identifies more than 92 million DNA elements involved in controlling gene activity, offering an unprecedented resource to better understand genome function, human development, and disease.

🔭 New paper in Nature!

Diego Blas at the centre is part of the collaboration, which has experimentally demonstrated that laser noise can be cancelled by comparing two atom interferometers.

This validates a key principle for future .

The result represents an important milestone towards large-scale facilities that could search for and explore previously inaccessible frequency bands.

🔬 A team led by Dr. Toni Gabaldón at the centre IRB Barcelona and the BSC-CNS reconstructs the genetic origin of the last common ancestor of all eukaryotes—the cellular lineage to which animals, plants, fungi, and protists belong.

The study challenges the idea that cellular complexity emerged from a single evolutionary encounter, pointing instead to a gradual process of interactions among different microorganisms that lasted for millions of years.

📝 The findings are published in Nature
