La aprobación de las Normas Técnicas de Seguridad de presas y embalses ha abierto un proceso de revisión y adecuación de muchas infraestructuras hidráulicas en España, especialmente aquellas que llevan décadas en explotación.

Este es el caso de la 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗮 𝗱𝗲 𝗥𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗿, en Jaén, una infraestructura en servicio desde 1941 cuya revisión de seguridad identificó vulnerabilidades hidrológicas, estructurales y de explotación.

En este contexto, 𝗜𝗗𝗢𝗠 𝗵𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗱𝗼 𝗲𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗷𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘀 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗮𝗿 𝗹𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗮 𝗮 𝗹𝗮 𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮 𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲, abordando desde nuevos estudios hidrológicos, geológicos y geotécnicos hasta el análisis de estabilidad y la definición de actuaciones constructivas.

Entre las soluciones planteadas destacan la ampliación del aliviadero, el recrecimiento de la coronación y el cuerpo de presa, nuevas pantallas de impermeabilización y drenaje, la modernización del desagüe de fondo, la mejora de los sistemas de auscultación y actuaciones sobre accesos y edificios de control.

La envergadura y representatividad del proyecto fueron presentadas por nuestro compañero Christian Quirós Nebrera en las 𝗫𝗜𝗩 𝗝𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗮𝘀 𝗘𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗻̃𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗮𝘀, celebradas en Granada, uno de los principales foros técnicos del sector.

The adoption of the Technical Safety Standards for Dams and Reservoirs has prompted a review and retrofitting process for numerous water infrastructure projects in Spain, especially those that have been operational for several decades.

One such project is the 𝗥𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗮𝗲́𝗻, which has been in operation since 1941. A safety review of the dam identified hydrological, structural and operational vulnerabilities.

𝗜𝗗𝗢𝗠 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. This project covers everything from new hydrological, geological and geotechnical studies to stability analysis and the definition of construction measures.

Notable solutions proposed include widening the spillway, raising the crest and dam body, installing new waterproofing and drainage linings, modernizing the bottom outlet, improving monitoring systems, and upgrading access roads and control buildings.

The scope and significance of the project were presented by our colleague Christian Quirós Nebrera at the 𝗫𝗜𝗩 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝗺 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, held in Granada, one of the sector’s leading technical forums.

La 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗼́𝗻 𝗱𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗼́𝗻 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 (RCA) favorable para el 𝗣𝘂𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗼, en Chile, supone un paso clave para el desarrollo de una de las infraestructuras portuarias más relevantes del país.

El proyecto contempla una inversión público-privada estimada en torno a 4.450 millones de USD, una capacidad proyectada de hasta 6 millones de TEU anuales y la incorporación de nuevos accesos viales y ferroviarios, con especial atención a la integración puerto-ciudad.

Desde IDOM hemos acompañado a la Empresa Portuaria Puerto San Antonio (EPSA) durante el proceso hasta la obtención de la RCA, desarrollando ingenierías complementarias y estudios técnicos para dar respuesta a las observaciones surgidas en la evaluación ambiental.

Este trabajo ha integrado modelaciones y estudios hidráulicos, geotécnicos, geofísicos y ambientales, además de propuestas de optimización del diseño, aportando una visión técnica multidisciplinar a un proyecto estratégico para la infraestructura portuaria chilena.

The favorable 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (RCA) for the 𝗦𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗼 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁 in Chile is a significant milestone for one of the country's most important port infrastructure projects.

The project is estimated to cost approximately US$4.45 billion and will have a projected capacity of up to 6 million TEUs per year. It will also add new road and rail access routes with a particular focus on port-city integration.

At IDOM, we supported the Puerto San Antonio (EPSA) throughout the process leading up to the issuance of the RCA. We carried out complementary engineering work and technical studies to address the comments raised in the environmental assessment.

Our work integrated hydraulic, geotechnical, geophysical, and environmental modeling and studies, as well as design optimization proposals. This approach provided a multidisciplinary technical perspective to a strategic project for Chile’s port infrastructure.

IDOM took part in 𝗔𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 in Pittsburgh, PA, a key industry gathering where we strengthened relationships with equipment manufacturers, industrial operators, and strategic technology partners, while also engaging with new stakeholders across the steel value chain.

Throughout the technical sessions, we gained first-hand insight into how emerging technologies are being deployed in real industrial environments. Six major trends stood out clearly: decarbonization through viable H₂‑DRI–EAF routes; industrial AI for safety, quality, and decision support; hybrid Digital Twins for real-time optimization; advanced electrification of power systems; automation and robotics to enhance safety and autonomy; and circular-economy strategies focused on by-product valorization.

At IDOM, we support our clients in addressing these challenges by delivering integrated engineering solutions from conceptual design to implementation focused on decarbonization roadmaps, process optimization, energy efficiency, digitalization, and the integration of advanced technologies into existing industrial assets.

Durante una semana de intercambio técnico, nuestros compañeros Gonzalo Tello (director de Arquitectura de Transporte) y Borja Aróstegui (director del proyecto de transformación de la estación Central de Santiago de Chile) participaron, junto a EFE Trenes de Chile y Adif, en un Study Tour por algunas de las estaciones ferroviarias más relevantes de España.

El recorrido por Madrid, Valencia, A Coruña y Vigo, visitando, entre otras, las estaciones Joaquín Sorolla (Valencia) y de A Coruña, diseñadas por IDOM; permitió conocer proyectos que afrontan retos como la modernización de las estaciones, la conservación del patrimonio, la operación durante las obras y la integración urbana, compartiendo experiencias y enfoques aplicables a la futura transformación de la estación de Santiago.

Las estaciones ya no son solo lugares de paso: son espacios de actividad y piezas clave en la construcción de ciudades más conectadas y dinámicas.

During a week-long technical exchange, our colleagues, Gonzalo Tello (Director of Transportation Architecture) and Borja Aróstegui (Project Director for the renovation of Santiago de Chile’s Central Station), participated in a study tour of some of Spain’s most significant railway stations alongside EFE Trenes de Chile (Chile) and Adif.

The tour, which included stops in Madrid, Valencia, A Coruña, and Vigo, provided an opportunity to learn about projects addressing challenges such as station modernization, heritage preservation, construction operations, and urban integration. It also allowed for the sharing of experiences and approaches applicable to the future transformation of the Santiago station.

Railway stations are no longer just places of transit; they are spaces of activity and key elements in creating more connected and dynamic cities.

We recently participated in the 𝗨𝗦𝗛𝗦𝗥 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗼𝗻, 𝗗.𝗖., one of the leading high-speed rail industry events in the United States.

Our colleagues Miguel Piñeiro and Borja Aróstegui Chapa participated in panel discussions with international rail industry leaders, supported by our Rail & Transit Global Lead, Lucas Alvarez Engel

🔹Miguel Piñeiro joined a panel on systems integration in high-speed rail projects.
🔹Borja Aróstegui Chapa contributed to a discussion on station development. He highlighted IDOM’s role in the redevelopment of Bilbao Abando Station for its integration into the Spanish high-speed rail network.

The event also highlighted significant advancements in the California High-Speed Rail program, where IDOM is anticipated to play a significant role leading the design activities for Signaling, Communications, and Traction Power Substations.

This was an excellent chance to share our thoughts on the future of high-speed rail and keep building our presence in the North American market.

La semana pasada participamos en 𝗨𝗦𝗛𝗦𝗥 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗲𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗖, uno de los eventos de referencia del sector ferroviario en Estados Unidos.

Nuestros compañeros Miguel Piñeiro y Borja Aróstegui Chapa participaron en distintos paneles junto a líderes internacionales del sector, con el apoyo de nuestro Rail & Transit Global Lead, Lucas Alvarez Engel:

Compartimos nuestra participación como ponentes en el III Congreso Internacional de Variabilidad y Cambio Climático, junto a nuestro experto Daniel Felipe Arango Díaz, en un espacio académico y técnico que promueve el intercambio de conocimiento frente a este desafío global.

Este trabajo propone una visión integral del riesgo climático, analizando no solo la producción, sino también etapas clave como la poscosecha, el almacenamiento, la transformación y la comercialización.

El estudio evidencia el impacto del cambio climático en los medios de vida rurales y la seguridad alimentaria, y permite identificar puntos críticos en las cadenas productivas, así como definir medidas de adaptación orientadas a fortalecer la resiliencia territorial.
Con esta participación, seguimos aportando soluciones técnicas basadas en evidencia para enfrentar los desafíos del cambio climático.

IDOM ha participado por tercer año consecutivo en el Master in Sport Design and Management del Politecnico di Milano, compartiendo nuestra experiencia en el diseño de estadios desde una perspectiva que combina innovación, tecnología, historia y contexto urbano.

Durante la sesión, presentamos nuestro modelo de trabajo y analizamos cómo abordar tanto estadios históricos como recintos de nueva generación, siempre adaptándonos a las necesidades del club y de la ciudad.

Desde San Mamés, Camp Nou y La Romareda, hasta proyectos como Claro Arena, Coliseum Getafe, Sánchez-Pizjuán o El Sardinero, mostramos cómo el diseño de estadios va más allá de la arquitectura: implica operación, experiencia de usuario, identidad y legado.

Volver a Milán por tercer año consecutivo, invitados por el Politécnico, es un reconocimiento al trabajo desarrollado por nuestros equipos y una gran oportunidad para seguir compartiendo conocimiento.

For the third consecutive year, IDOM participated in the Master's in Sport Design and Management program at the Polytechnic University of Milan. We shared our expertise in stadium design, combining innovation, technology, history, and urban context.

During the session, we presented our working model and discussed our approach to historic and next-generation stadiums, adapting to the needs of the club and the city.

We demonstrated how stadium design goes beyond architecture to encompass operations, user experience, identity, and legacy, as seen in projects ranging from San Mamés, Camp Nou, and La Romareda to Claro Arena, Coliseum Getafe, Sánchez-Pizjuán, and El Sardinero.

Returning to Milan for the third consecutive year at the invitation of the Polytechnic is recognition of our teams' work and a great opportunity to continue sharing knowledge.
