We are excited to announce the publication of our new open-access article in Pathogens MDPI, titled "𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀: 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀."

This study, led by our partner ITACyL - Instituto Tecnológico Agrario de Castilla y León, highlights the antimicrobial power of hop-derived soft resins, achieving MIC90 values as low as 25 μg/mL against 𝘚. 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘶𝘴 and 50 μg/mL against 𝘌. 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘪.

By repurposing brewing industry by-products, we’re advancing eco-friendly solutions to combat microbial resistance, aligning with circular economy principles.

Natural compounds like carvacrol and thymol also showed strong antimicrobial activity at low concentrations. Future steps? Isolating key compounds for scalable, sustainable applications in coatings and beyond.

This study, led by our coordinator Tecnalia and partners ITACyL - Instituto Tecnológico Agrario de Castilla y León and NORCE, addresses the growing demand for eco-friendly antimicrobial coatings, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional metal-based solutions.
By leveraging lignin-based alkyd resins enriched with natural bioadditives like thymol (a cosmetic industry by-product) and soft hop resins (a beer production waste product), we’ve developed coatings that are both effective and environmentally responsible.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀:
✅ Proven Antimicrobial Performance: Successfully combats 𝘌𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘪, 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘶𝘴, and Influenza A (H3N2) virus, meeting ISO standards (ISO 22196:2007 and ISO 21702:2019).
✅ Sustainable Innovation: Repurposed natural materials align with circular economy principles, reducing waste and environmental impact.
✅ Enhanced Properties: Excellent adhesion, durability, and gloss make these coatings ideal for healthcare, public infrastructure, and beyond.
✅ Eco-Friendly Impact: A viable alternative to coatings reliant on harmful metals like silver and copper.

This study brings the coating industry closer to reducing pathogen transmission while advancing bio-based, sustainable technologies.

🌿The LIGNICOAT project is over, but one thing is clear: Its impact on the bio-based coatings field is set to endure.

🎯 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴
Yesterday, our consortium held its final review meeting. During this meeting, the project officer and the experts interacted with our partners and gave a final assessment of our project, which will be included in the consolidated review report.

The coordinator and each work package leader provided concise yet comprehensive presentations on the activities performed in this second and final periodic report. Under the coordination of TECNALIA Research & Innovation, the consortium proved to be compact and agile in adapting to various challenges encountered (e.g., technical difficulties and delays) and actuating mitigation plans that proved to be successful delivering four bio-based coatings based on lignin for different applications (wood and metal), and with enhanced properties such as fire protection, anticorrosion, antimicrobial, and antiviral.

💡During the meeting, the experts initiated intense and productive discussions, offering suggestions to amplify the impact of our research results in increasing the market readiness of our TRL5-level solutions.

📈 Our results outlook is promising, and we have witnessed eager industry interest in our bio-based coating solutions.

We are excited to announce the publication of our new open-access article in Royal Society of Chemistry Applied Polymers, titled "𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝘆𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗨 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀."

This study, led by our coordinator Tecnalia and partners AEP Polymers and Ecoat, showcases a significant milestone in developing sustainable coatings. We've successfully scaled up the production of lignin-based polyols (LPOs) to kilogram scale, proving the viability in an industrial setting.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀:
• Scaled up LPO production from 15 mL to 5 L reactors
• Integrated all process steps in a single reactor for higher efficiency
• Developed in-process control methods using THF content for improved reproducibility
• Partially substituted standard polyols with LPOs in alkyd-polyurethane dispersions (PUDs)
• Demonstrated comparable performance of LPO-based PUDs to reference PUDs in key areas

This study brings the coating industry closer to developing more sustainable coatings.

🌱 𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗡𝗜𝗖𝗢𝗔𝗧 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗟𝗖𝗔 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽🌱

Last December 4, 2024, the LIGNICOAT project team joined the "Anticipatory LCA to Promote Informed Decision-Making" workshop, hosted by the SuperBark and BIORING projects.

Our partner, ARDITEC Association, shared key challenges and takeaways from our LIGNICOAT LCA journey, including insights on data collection for bio-based products and scaling from lab to industry.

Although LIGNICOAT concluded in November, its findings remain a valuable resource for ongoing EU-funded initiatives working on sustainability in bio-based materials.
