💧 WATER QUALITY PARAMETERS | pH • TDS • TSS • TS
Understanding basic water-quality parameters is essential for evaluating water quality and monitoring treatment performance.
🔹 pH — Acidity & Alkalinity
pH indicates hydrogen-ion activity and whether water is acidic, neutral, or alkaline.
pH = −log₁₀(H⁺)
Affects biological processes, chemical treatment, coagulation/flocculation, and corrosion/scaling control.
🔹 TDS — Total Dissolved Solids
Represents dissolved salts, minerals, and other dissolved substances that pass through a standard filtration step.
Commonly reported in mg/L (or ppm).
🔹 TSS — Total Suspended Solids
Represents particulate matter retained by a standard filtration method.
TSS (mg/L) = Mass of dried residue (mg) × 1000 / Sample volume (mL)
🔹 TS — Total Solids
Total solids generally comprise dissolved and suspended solids:
TS ≈ TDS + TSS
The relationship is most appropriate when the analytical methods and sample basis are compatible.
📌 Quick Reference:
• pH → Dimensionless
• TDS → mg/L or ppm
• TSS → mg/L
• TS → mg/L

⚠️ Measurement methods, reporting requirements, and applicable limits depend on the water type, analytical standard, and intended application.
