✨ Some projects go beyond architecture.
Projects that become memory.
At CRICURSA, we had the honour of shaping the curved glass of The Oculus, the striking skylight of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, Australia. A series of double-curved glass petals where light, engineering, and remembrance intertwine, creating a space for quiet reflection.
The design studio Scott Carver Architects sought to visually connect the old entrance with the new, crafting a space just beneath the existing plaza that invites contemplation.
The Oculus features a central spherical glass element 3 metres in diameter and sixteen double-curved glass panels, approximately 55 mm thick, composed of extra-clear tempered laminated glass with a SentryGlass interlayer, as well as a 12 mm black warm-edge Super Spacer®️ TriSeal™️ Flex by Edgetech. Inside the dome, another sixteen panels with opposing curvatures form a delicate veil of hyperboloid-shaped glass flowers.
32 unique pieces, each weighing up to 350 kg, manufactured with millimetric precision and digital printing, made possible only through extraordinary international collaboration and the dedication of every team involved.
As Carlos Pajuelo, Technical Director at Cricursa, explains:
“Every detail required extreme tolerances and total coordination to harmonise geometry, surface treatment, and digital printing. This project demonstrates that precision and passion can transform glass into art.”
We extend our gratitude to all who made this project possible: architects, engineers, clients, and partners who turned a technical challenge into a work rich with meaning. 💎
